I remember hearing "Teacher's Pet" on the radio when I was about 4 or 5 back in the '50s. Many years later, I had a temporary job alphabetizing the albums in a used record store that had just opened. I thought I would never get through the D section. I had no idea that there were so many Doris Day albums. She was marvelous in Hitchcock's remake of The Man Who Knew Too Much.

A little humor to brighten this sad thread. Milton Berle used to joke that he knew Doris before she was a virgin. Reference of course to all of her movies where she played the virginal girl next door.

Absolutely loved her in "Pillow Talk" (1959) and "Lover Come Back" (1961)!

I am a huge fan (I have all four of her box sets from Bear Family). She was a great jazz, and later pop singer and a true humanitarian as far as her caring for defenseless animals went. She had an incredible life, but was victimized many times by her spouses and lost her beloved son at a very young age.

I pray that she has a wonderful "Eternal Rest" in heaven with her son Terry...

Like a lot of people, I suspect, I'm tantalised by what might have happened if she'd accepted the role of Mrs. Robinson in The Graduate.

It could have totally recharged her screen career and might have given her singing career a real link to the counter-culture (which was already available to her - sort of - via her son, but she didn't seem to make any use of it). As she was a somewhat politically conservative individual, though, she may not have wanted that.

    Legendary star. Some irreverant thoughts..

At 97, as Mel Brooks would say, she was asking for it.

I always remember a quote about Doris Day after her image was molded into the wholesome, goody two-shoes girl next door, "I knew Doris Day before she was a virgin."

Very sad to hear. What a great lady!

When icons reach this age, or have been around as long as she has, you just come to accept that the world will always have Doris Day (or whoever) in it...of course, we should know better.

She had a long and interesting life, and she gave us a lot of memorable moments, both in films and on tape... And, by all accounts, she was a lovely lady. R.I.P.

Doris Day, very nice singer, friend of animals, and luminous star of two of my favorite romantic comedies, Pillow Talk and Lover Come Back.

DD I’m not sure. I miss my Terry [son Terry Melcher] every day. But I keep him here and I’m so happy that he’s singing on the album. I used to love to hear him sing and he should have done more things. I get mail from his friends all the time saying he had so much talent and he was always laid back. He didn’t push himself. He was such a good guy and I loved him dearly.

PM I knew Terry a little bit in the Sixties and he was a really nice man. But you were right, he didn’t push himself. I didn’t either though come to think of it.

    Sure, Paul — whatever.

Let's not forget her great acting and singing work in Alfred Hitchcock's THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH, from where her famous song "Que Sera, Sera" comes.
