LOUD Remasterings - Why do they keep doing it? What can we do about it?

Inspired by the thread above, a few members mentioned having our own thread dedicated to building and creating our own reference library recording the Dynamic range of the CD albums in our collections.

To analyse the DR values of your CD's and Downloads you will need the following software......

Foobar along with it's Dynamic Range plugin.....

    foobar2000

    Dynamic Range Plugin

For those of you participating and so that everything is easily searchable, please record your findings as follows.....

    Artist Name - Album Name

    Record Label

    UPC/EAN Code

    Year of Release

    Disc number (Where applicable)

Average DR - Minimum DR - Maximum DR

    The DR Log file

We need to also be aware that whilst dynamic range is important, there are other factors involved, such EQ and Noise Reduction, that can positively or negatively affect the overall sound quality. This being the case it would also be helpful if you were to add a short summary of your thoughts on the overall sound quality and mastering.

In order to make things easier for everyone, here are some important instructions on how best to use the search funtion......

    1. Click on the search box within this thread.
    2. I entered the UPC code 090204990559 for the album "Albert King - Live Wire Blues Power" into the search box, alternatively you could also just as easily enter the Artist Name or Album Title, either way the search result would be the same......
    3. I ticked the box to "Search This Thread Only"
    4. Click "Search"

Here is an image of the result the search feature came up with.....

For example, I entered the UPC code 090204990559 for the album "Albert King - Live Wire Blues Power"

Here is a screen shot of the result that came up, if you then click on the link it takes you directly to the post for that album.......

While I appreciate the sentiment of this thread, I wonder about its practical value. A good database or reference library must be searchable and well-indexed for it to be of much use to anyone. Suppose I wanted to find a great version of Albert King's Live Wire Blues. If this thread becomes hundreds of pages long, and even if all the metadata is provided per hodgo's suggestion, I believe finding this entry will be tedious. Why not simply find the album in the online DR database, or if a particular version of a recording is not there, upload it?

If you read my post, towards the bottom you will see I reference the DR Database,

Part of the idea behind this thread is to encourage members to view and upload their info to the DR Database.

If you notice in my opening post, I have asked that members set out their uploads in a particular manner, by doing this every artist and album will be easily searchable within the thread.....

For example, I entered the UPC code 090204990559 for the album "Albert King - Live Wire Blues Power"

Here is a screen shot of the result that came up, if you then click on the link it takes you directly to the post for that album.......

The DR Database has over 120,000 albums in it. Why try to reproduce that here? Seems futile and makes people have to look in two places.

There's no harm having another place to go, as I also said the idea is also to encourage others to learn and encourage members to add their findings to the existing Database.

I've been think about that, I'd actually think there should be an entire section on this forum only dedicated to dynamic range and sound quality overall.

Feel free to use thread for that purpose.

As long as everyone sets out their info as in my original post, everything will be easily searchable and discussion on the various aspects of sound quality for each listing can follow.

Someone mentioned the dynamic range site database, that site has only numbers in diagrams, those doesn't always show peak limiting - I prefer to look at wave forms to get a visual look at a song. I once compared two different issues of Acquiring The Taste by Gentle Giant and the slightly peak limited remaster (BGO second press twofer) showed a bit higher dynamic range then the non remaster and not at all peak limited (original Vertigo). Peak clipping does to my ears a different thing to the sound then regular compression, it creates a artificial bass that isn't natural. Here we can post wave forms to show each other.

A thread could be a start, if it gets too big maybe an own section could be the next step.

If you want to post waveforms in addition to the DR values, that's fine, but you must post the DR info as set out in my original post.
