Jerry, I can add little to the names already dropped but I always suggest Glen Gray and His Casa Loma Orchestra (which encompasses a wide range of areas from sweet, ballad, novelty, later swing etc as well as hot music more in your targets - for instance their Limehouse Blues was famous). On the jazz side, I didn't happen to catch if James P Johnson was named, but he's a wonderful pianist recorded solo and with bands.

Thanks everyone, and keep 'em coming!

The frustrating thing is that many of the suggested discs are OOP and expensive or just not available at all.

stick with the frantic "rough around the edges" black jazz of the late 20's, early 30's and you'll be fine. Lots of PD CDs of this stuff around, I would imagine.

Thank the white college kids of 1928 for getting great black bands like Bennie Moten to make more records.

Hip college kids knew that Victor had a "Race" series (38,000) of hot records (Race Records, made for the Race, ya know? Weird but true) and they would scan the catalog looking for hot titles.

A kid from Stanford would write a letter to Victor and say, "Hey, we dig this Bennie Moten. Have him make some more sides and we'll buy them."

So, Victor telegraphs Bennie's agent and has the band come in to a Victor studio to cut 8 more sides, that's 4 records, five bucks a side, no royalties. That's five dollars for THE ENTIRE BAND. Moten could advertise at his gigs that he was a "Victor Recording Artist" and he was happy (though robbed). The college kids would buy the records at a dollar a pop, making Victor a great deal of money, no royalties.

That's how it worked. At least we have the records and the music to enjoy. Many bands didn't get to record at all.

Think about it, Bennie Moten's SOUTH, perhaps the most famous of all the pre-swing black records cost Victor five bucks and sold a million records, staying in the catalog until the 1980s!! No royalties. Yikes, someone got screwed, but that was how it worked.

The white bands faired not much better. A little but not much.

Only artists like Al Jolson got a royalty. 1/2 a penny per disk sold or something like that. In 1934 Bing recorded for the new US Decca and made a penny a disk sold. That was a breakthrough..

    -----------

Oh, don't forget JIMMIE NOONE & HIS APEX CLUB ORCHESTRA (with Earl Hines) "My Monday Date" or DON REDMAN & HIS ORCHESTRA (with Red Allen) "Shakin' The African" McKINNEY'S COTTON PICKERS "I'd Love It", etc..

When I finished fixing up the Dual 1019 I found at Goodwill this past summer, I set it up with a Shure M78S cartridge. The first discs I played were an album of Bix reissue 78s pressed in the '40s from (I believe) the original 1920s metal parts. I was COMPLETELY FLOORED! Bix and Tram were RIGHT THERE in my music room!!!

Man, that stuff sounds killer on 78!!!

Amen to that, uncannily spooky lifelike from the 1920's. Those Bix/Frank T. OKEH sides (1940's reissued on US red Columbia) are awesome. Western Electric Sound at its best..

I've seen some of those red Columbia 1940's "Recording Ban" 78's for less than a buck each recently, all pressed from the original direct cut OKEH stampers.

Note that not everything that was recorded was "hot jazz", a lot of it was "sweet music" (sometimes with often horrible vocals) that had nothing to do with jazz.

I learn something new on here practially every day. :D I didn't realize Baby Dodds had a brother. I need to check him out. I was going to suggest The Baby Dodds Trio disc "Jazz a la Creole" to Jerry but it was recorded in the 40s, I think. I picked it up in New Orleans. It's fantastic. (And it's still in print.)

For jazz of that era, John R. T. Davies mastered cds sound mostly wonderful - only limited by the quality of sources used.

Here is a thread that lists a lot of the John R. T. Davies mastered releases compiled by forum member RZangpo2:
    http://www.stevehoffman.tv/forums/showthread.php?t=47614&highlight=jsp

    RZangpo2 stated:

"Here's the ones I have. The 300, 600, and 700 series are all OOP, as are the Hoagy Carmichael discs, but some of the material has been reissued in the budget boxed set "900" series.

However, that's only the beginning. At last count I have 509 titles mastered by Davies and Kendall, on the Collector's Classics, Frog, Hep, Jazz Oracle, King Jazz, Media 7, Nostalgia Arts, Retrieval, Sensation, and Timeless labels, as well a few miscellaneous projects on other labels. There's also the Jonzo series of Bing Crosby's complete recordings, the earliest volumes of which were mastered by Davies and the rest by Kendall.

I'm not saying all this music is of the caliber of the Hot 5s and 7s, but some is essential. Don't miss the two volumes of Satchmo's big band sides on JSP, which continue chronologically where the Hot 5 and 7 volumes leave off. Also on JSP is the complete Jelly Roll Morton in 5 volumes. On Hep -- still in print -- are the complete Count Basie Decca recordings (3 volumes); all of Fletcher Henderson's great 1933-34 recordings (2 vols.); and Teddy Wilson's wonderful 1930s small groups, most with Billie Holiday (6 vols.). And then there is the complete Bessie Smith on Frog (8 volumes), mastered by Davies -- the best sonics these recordings have ever had.

Some of the lesser-known artists on the list are wonderful, too. The Spirits of Rhythm, for example, just to choose one at random. I've made many happy discoveries by following the work of Davies and Kendall. You can, too!

Aw, heck; here's the complete list (except for the JSP titles listed above). Happy hunting!

If you want to do research without buying anything, or just enjoy some good music, listen to WAMU's "Hot Jazz Saturday Night" (the program streams live and can be listened to for one week afterward). The website also has playlists and program notes.

Don't forget Fletcher Henderson. His band, in 1927, was probably the best jazz orchestra in the country. He hired people like Coleman Hawkins and Fats Waller yo great effect.

A slightly different group of jazz records from the period are now largely overlooked: those of Red Nichols. His groups with untested kids lke Benny Goodman and Gene Krupa hold up well. Some of them are every bit as wild as anything made back then. Others are more muted, but just as good.

Hi Jerry...... If you like Hot Jazz Violin music from that era I highly recommend "Hot Swing Fiddle Classics" from Arhoolie Records.

A bit hard to find, and unfortunately not on CD, but a really great record. Considered by genre enthusiast to be one of the top Hot Swing Violin records out there. As good as the Grappelli/Django stuff IMO.

Give me a holler and I can play you a few cuts....

Charlie Christian recorded from 1939-1941 (he's a little later than the time period you mentioned) but he is certainly a must listen. Charlie Christian was one of the earliest jazz electric guitarists.

Well, the outpouring of suggestions and information is overwhelming, and I thank you all. Keep it coming! Here's a suggestion of my own, some recordings that I never get tired of:

The Rhythmakers. The 1932 version of the supergroup. Being an early integrated band, they couldn't tour, but could record together in various incarnations. My favorite cut is "Who Stole the Lock on the Hen House Door?". Henry "Red" Allen handles the vocals and plays some wild trumpet, but Tommy Dorsey steals the show with a crazy trombone solo that'll rattle your bones.

    Some background:

The real spark behind the Rhythmakers can be summed up in three words: Henry "Red" Allen. Teamed with surrealistic reedman Pee Wee Russell (who plays a lot of tenor sax in addition to his famously wry clarinet), Red stirred up the Rhythmakers in the same way that he completely transformed every band he ever worked with. In addition to the dynamic front line, these snappy sides from 1932 are worthwhile mainly for the presence of pianists Joe Sullivan and Fats Waller, bassists Al Morgan and Pops Foster, and drummers Gene Krupa and Zutty Singleton. What about the nominal leader? Well, Billy Banks sounded more than a little like Cab Calloway in 1932, even singing some of the same topical hits. Billy seems to have gotten waylaid en route to the studio on April 18th. The band cooked up a steaming "Bugle Call Rag" while waiting for the singer to arrive. This is the only instrumental track on the entire album. It is followed by "Oh Peter (You're So Nice)" which has a vocal by Red Allen. Finally Banks showed and sang "Margie" in his rather shrill voice, sounding almost goofy after the wonderfully husky tones of Allen. The session of May 10th uses an unidentified band. Banks tried hard to be clever, scatting up a storm on "The Scat Song," but there are less kicks to be had with this group. As if to make up for a missed opportunity, Banks sang "Oh Peter" on May 23rd with the original ensemble except for Krupa, who was replaced by the mighty Zutty. Billy scats nicely on "Who's Sorry Now?" and "Take It Slow and Easy." These are strong performances, tough stomps played by a band that gradually works Billy down to a hipper delivery. "Bald Headed Mama" focuses on a theme revived years later by Professor Longhair ("Bald Head") and Lou Donaldson ("Wig Blues"). The epicenter of this album is the session of July 26th, 1932. Fats Waller and Pops Foster gas up the band so solidly that Banks sounds vicariously hipper than ever. Red Allen wails while Pee Wee plays only tenor sax, the clarinet being handled by Jimmy Lord. Strum support from simultaneous banjo and guitar certainly doesn't hurt. The most exciting track is "Mean Old Bed Bug Blues" with a very funny falsetto vocal chorus by Fats. W.C. Handy's "Yellow Dog Blues" bumps along at a good clip, with a marvelous piano solo after the perky vocal. "Yes Suh!" is pure vaudeville call-and-response. There's no telling who was in the band on August 18th 1932. About half of this material is quite rare, and it's good to have all of Banks' work on one disc. The album closes with Jack Bland and His Rhythmakers, a racially mixed band that blows the roof off of the "Hen House Door." This is one of Red Allen's wildest vocals on record. "Shine on Your Shoes," popularized by Fred Astaire, features unnervingly wholesome vocalist Chick Bullock, who advises everyone to face each dawn with polished footwear, either literally or metaphorically. The band cooks so hard it doesn't matter who the vocalist is! Bullock was the most heavily recorded vocalist of the 1930s, and this track is, without question, the best side he ever piped in on.

Wow. Good stuff. Thanks everyone. Gonna have to get a 78 deck going. I've got an old standup victrola and a few 78's. But it's really just a conversation piece. Looks like I need a real turntable that can do 78.

I pretty much pretend 45's don't exist as I already have way too many albums. But it looks like I'm gonna have to recognize the existence of 78's since I love so much of the music.
