I'm not missing the point. I had the exact same thing happen. Pure, undiluted record seller sleaze -- the type of which existed long before the Internet era.

A couple of years ago I saw a BIN album I inquired about. It was $59.00 and I wasn't desperate for it, but was considering it. No answer after several days, so I emailed again. Suddenly the price became $99. I kept the seller's name in mind -- he has a visible eBay presence. I won't ever give him a single dime.

Reminds me of another type of record seller sleaze that you sometimes hear about. Years ago, a friend of a friend of mine, big record collector, bought a huge lot of still sealed cutouts which he carefully went through and picked out what he wanted to keep. I got word that I could go through them and see if there was anything I wanted. Probably around 2,000 LPs. I went through them and picked out about a dozen I wanted. Asked him how much he wanted for them. "Oh," ... he said after seeing what I'd found, "those aren't for sale." Basically I donated my expertise to expand his collection. Like I said before, pure undiluted record collector sleaze.

    Never again.

And as for sudden price rises -- NO SALE.

    :agree:

I've been reading this thread. This ebay seller is a jerk!!! I'll never buy from him! It's not the price - it's not even raising the price after you emailed him - it's the tone of that email.

I don't know much about the law, and I'm far from a lawyer (apart from having to hire a few over the years), but I do know there's an important legal principle that says, "a gift once given is as good as sold."

This is a legal principle that goes back to at least 1885 (Standing v Bowring), with a similar case.

The bottom line is: once you abandon title to something, like throw it in a public trash can or give it to a friend, you can't tell anybody what to do with it -- whether you know them or not.

I'm reminded of the Seinfeld episode that popularized the term "re-gifting," where somebody gives you a gift you don't want, then you give it away to somebody else. In one sense, it's kind of rude, but to me, once you give something away, you have to stop worrying about it.

But an eBay dealer that arbitrarily raises a price in circumstances like these... that's dirty pool, and the buyer is within his rights to not buy it, assuming no money has crossed hands. If they try this after they received the money, then I think it breaks eBay rules (and some state laws).

That made me chuckle. Sounds like his past experience in the corporate sector might be slipping into his ebay side of things.

Anyway...personally I wouldn't bother buying from the guy based his response to you. Sounds like a bit of a, well you know.

You'll find it somewhere else for $10.

  10. I just fired off a question about the Toto CD. Here it is.....

"Is this CD really only $19.99 or will the price go to $29.99 after I ask a question about some numbers on the disk?"

Maybe I will get an answer.

I couldn't help it I had to send an email question myself:

"Hello, I'd like to buy this CD, but the price isn't high enough. Could you please raise it some more?"

I know, I know, its juvenile, infantile even. But sellers like this REALLY deserve to be ribbed, IMO. And maybe it will start to sink in that word is getting around about his practices..

I worked for someone who loved to write notes to people dripping with caustic sarcasm, just like this seller. He would have not sold you the item had he done so, but he could have simply replied to the initial inquiry by stating that he doesn't check individual titles for the requested information and that the buyer can make his decision based on the information already provided.

I would say that the SHF minions who are now starting to email him just to get a rise out of him are basically playing the same p***ing game he is.

Reminds me of a recent conflict I had with an eBay seller. My final note to him began,

    "Mike,
    You unbelievable toddler..."
