I notice that 2 out of my 3 favorites, Blue Moves and Don't Shoot Me, didn't do too well here.

I, too am surprised at how poorly Piano Player did. That is an incredibly solid album top to bottom.

Don't Shoot Me did really well. 186 points is enough to win most polls. It's just that 5 other albums got an exceptionally high number of votes.

Now, Leather Jackets and Victim Of Love didn't do well...:D

Fully agree. Especially in retrospect those late 70's and 80's albums sound quite excellent ! And just listen to any compilation that lines up the singles from the era... How can you improve on that ! Well, except with his 70's singles, of course ;)

The Very Best Of Elton John comp from 1990 is excellent. Fantastic sounding disc(s) too.

With so many great albums, some are bound to be underappreciated in a poll. But still, the eponymous second album got even less votes than Don't Shoot Me. And in spite of the fact that they are considered his "classic years" era, Caribou and Rock of the Westies should have done considerably better.

Not mad about the self-titled album, but the rest are great.

You´re definitely NOT alone. (Not "A Single Man", in other words. Cheap and tacky, I know...) I love the album, as I have stated above, and I just love the SHM mini LP version of the CD. It has all the bonus tracks and sounds great.

Surprisingly, the track I like the least is the lead single, "PART TIME LOVE". It´s not terrible, just a bit Elton on autopilot.

Part Time Love is so jaunty it really doesn't fit with the rest of the material on ASM. Definitely an attempt to write 'a single'. I quite like it though.

Oh, I like it, too. But it sounds so much like the archetypal Elton John uptempo song - like "BREAKING DOWN THE BARRIERS" and so many others. That doesn´t make it a bad song - and it´s well placed on the album, opening side two of the LP, and following a very long track. Yes, it´s a bit too jaunty and a bit too formulaic, but I don´t dislike it. I just like the rest of the songs on "A SINGLE MAN" better. Even "BIG DIPPER". :agree:

is the SHM better than the standard cd, I mean soundwise? I really like the sound of my old Rocket copy

I´m no expert. I had the Rocket version years ago, but exchanged it for the remaster. It didn´t impress me, soundwise, but it was O.K. I bought the SHM version to save space on my shelves, but I was pleasantly surprised by the sound quality. I do not believe that SHSM has anything to do with it, but perhaps the mastering was slightly different?

Sorry I can´t help more - but I do liek the sound of the SHM. That´s subjective.

I don't understand that comment. Few of Taupin's lyrics have a high saccharine content and GBYBR is no exception. "Harmony" is the only truly sentimental song in the collection but it never bothered me. In fact, I would say it is a highlight and should have been a single. Plus, it only clocks in at 2:46 seconds. That's a very small percentage of the album.

It’s a long album, but never really dull. If I had to scrap one track it’d be Dirty Little Girl.

I agree Dirty is probably the weakest link. I never really cared for it too much. However, I suppose it fits in well thematically on "Side 3" and the music doesn't sound out of place either. GBYBR was one my my first albums back in 1976.

    Empty Sky (psych pop aspect)
Friends (string arrangements, great flow, good songs)
Madman Across The Water (again- Paul Buckmaster string arrangements, great songs)
    Honky Chateau (the deep cuts)
Goodbye Yellow Brick Road (the hits)

my #6 just might be Greatest Hits Volume 3! (I have it on both Lp & CD)o_O
