Elton John To Celebrate 50th Anniversary Of Madman Across The Water (musictap.com)

Rock and Roll has easily surpassed the 60th anniversay of its arrival. Since, nothing has come close in music style to change it other than generational taste. The influences remain the same as they ever were. And with that, there are more than a few 50th Anniversaries for quite a few great albums. One of them is Madman Across The Water, the 1971 album (his fourth) from Elton John.

Soon, there will be a (somewhat belated) 3CD/BD 50th Anniversary package to be released. And while there are no bits of info as of yet (other than the pack shot), this set now holds place as a coveted set. Judging by the photo, I’d speculate that there are hi-res mixes (it released as an SACD some years back), and perhaps even 5.1 Surround mixes. Certainly the booklet looks rich enough. And with 3CDs, I’d say the odds of outtakes, rehearsal tracks, alternate tracks, and live performance tracks are extremely high for this upcoming set. And a fold out poster for framing in your library room! But remember…everything is speculative, even the above photo.

Keep an eye or two on MusicTAP and other great informative sites for better details as they emerge. But that pack shot says much!!

Quadrophonicquad & IMWAN offered a few more details than what is offered in that article from musictap.com.

No mention yet of what will be on the Blu-ray. The pack shot clearly shows that it IS a Blu-ray disc hopefully including Dolby Atmos mixes of the album and bonus tracks.
This set will apparently also come in 2CD and 3CD editions according to IMWAN.

CD1 is probably nothing I need, unless it is (miraculously in this era) audiophile quality and blows away previous editions.
CD3 is fine, but that material has been easily available on Youtube for a long time.
CD2 has my attention for the piano demos. I wonder if those were dribs and drabs, or if Elton played through all of them in a small number of sessions?

Im intrigued to know what is on the Blu-ray. Especially if it might be a Dolby Atmos mix of the album. Id love to think that this could be the start of similar 50th anniversary releases of all of Elton's albums. Its a bummer that we didnt get that for Elton John and Tumbleweed Connection too, if that ends up being the case.

YES I knew something like this had to happen. Been wanting an expanded Madman since 2008 when Rolling Western Union leaked in superior quality. This looks like a gorgeous box. Wonder if it's made of denim... Lol.

Oh, well if something has been available as a boot on YouTube, by all means, it should be excluded from any deluxe sets. :shh: I don’t know about you, but I’d much rather have an official release from the master tapes on a CD or digital download instead of heading to my YouTube app. Maybe that’s just me.

I could see the BD contain both the 5.1 mix/Atmos mix of the album and the Video presentation of the Sounds for Saturday concert....

Maybe the Blu-ray is actually the video of the BBC Sounds for Saturday concert. He played nearly the entire album live and it was captured in good quality.

I doubt there are master tapes of a video that was presented on BBC. Probably just the soundtrack to the video. But, sure, if there's something appreciably better, then by all means bring it on.

A few thoughts: I hope the long version of "Razor Face" will be a part of the package. It was on the SACD layer of the old SACD hybrid from years back. Also, I hope we can get crazywater in here to see if he knows anything else.

one of the very best Elton albums ever IMO, I just loved this era up till '76 or so. I'd be in for this one.

This is all I need. I really hope that for Madman we get HiRes, surround mixes, the video for Sounds Of Saturday, and this sets up a template for all albums in the future.
This template should then be replicated for all the albums, with Royal Festival Hall for Honky Chateau, the BBC concert for the self titled, and so on. Who knows, we might get Hollywood Bowl with GYBR, or Dodger Stadium for Captain Fantastic.

    Yay!!!

My favorite Elton album! I've always been seemingly alone in finding this one underrated, if not his actual "best". But I'm glad Elton at least shares my view. :p

Assuming he is even aware this is coming out?

The "Piano Demo" version of "All The Nasties" on the recent Jewel Box set was even better than the version that ended up on the album.

The Blue Ray will feature a documentary on the making of the Madman album narrated by Tony Danza titled “Hold Me Closer.”

    /just kidding

Really looking forward to this release. Madman is easily my favorite EJ album.

I was hoping for a Deluxe Box Set for all of EJ”s Albums from Self Titled(My Favorite EJ Album) up through Captain Fantastic, but apparently that is not happening, and already looks like there will not be Deluxe Box Sets for all of the Bowie Albums, as after Conversation Piece Deluxe Box Set, there was just a smaller Mini CD Set, which was released for The Man Who Sold The World, and nothing for Hunky Dory, so might just be done for a few of his Albums, and assume will get a Deluxe Box Set for Ziggy Stardust next(although we were given Station to Station Deluxe Box Set in 2010, but that mixed CDs, DVD High Res and Vinyl, and I had not bought it on release as never thought I would eventually get interested in Vinyl, and paid a lot more a few years ago to obtain a copy, but still below the current secondary market prices for a copy in Brand New/Sealed Condition, and from one of my Favorite Sellers here).

While I am interested in a Deluxe Box Set for Madman Across the Water, it will depend on the price, as I doubt the the Remastered CD will be better in SQ, than either the MFSL Ultradisc or recent 2019 Japan SHM CD Versions. I had originally wrote this post in the Elton John Jewel Box Set Thread, where this Madman Across the Water Deluxe Box Set was mentioned with the information that there would not be a BluRay included, but apparently that is now a possibility, so will be interested to know if the BluRay is 5.1 and Atmos for the Album, or for a Concert(with Surround Sound option along with Stereo 2.0). More likely now to buy this Deluxe Box Set, even if the Remastered CD for the Album will never get played over my copies of the MFSL Ultradisc and Japan SHM CD(2019), and the rest of this Deluxe Box Set has enough of content and value for me.
