Austin Butler wins 'Best Leading Actor' BAFTA for 'Elvis'

In what will go down as one of the most remarkable nights in his career, now Austin Butler can celebrate properly after taking home the BAFTA Award for his starring role in Elvis.

The fight for ‘Best Leading Actor’ was a hotly contested one this year. With star turns from some of the industry’s brightest stars, including Colin Farrell for his work in The Banshees of Inisherin, Brendan Fraser for his role in The Whale, Paul Mescal’s star turn in Aftersun and Bill Nighy’s efforts in Living. However, it was Butler who took home the prize.

The movie expert at Deadline thinks that Austin Butler and the Elvis movie now have some serious momentum for a Best Actor win at Oscars next month.

Warner Bros. also has to be happy with its impressive four BAFTA wins for Elvis, including Austin Butler in the very tight Best Actor race over British favorites Bill Nighy and Ireland’s Colin Farrell, as well as Brendan Fraser in The Whale. Leading into SAG next Sunday, that gives Butler some genuine momentum. In fact, of the six BAFTA Best Actor nominees, Butler, and Fraser were the only ones not from the United Kingdom. The Oscar momentum crown also goes to Cate Blanchett, who was expected to win Lead Actress for Tar, and did, marking that film’s only win of the weekend.

Great question. Apparently the final voting hasn't even started yet. Apparently, voting is done online. Here are the start dates and end dates from the Oscar site itself.

Finals voting begins 9 a.m. PT Thursday, March 2, 2023
Finals voting ends 5 p.m. PT Tuesday, March 7, 2023

@RSteven beat me to it by seconds!

This feels like it means Oscar votes can be more influenced by the results of other award ceremonies than if the voting started immediately after nominees were announced.

We have the SAG Awards next Sunday, February 26th, so that is one more test for Austin before the finale March 12th at the Oscars.

Austin Butler, 'Banshees of Inisherin' Oscar Chances ... - Variety

For his performance as Elvis Presley, Austin Butler managed to dance past Brendan Fraser (“The Whale”) and, notably, Colin Farrell (“Banshees”), who was heavily favored to win the BAFTA prize among pundits.

With four days left in the SAG voting period, Butler may have received a much-needed boost to push him across the finish line, especially if he manages to repeat next Sunday at the SAG Awards ceremony. Fraser and Farrell both have one televised award thus far, with the former having Critics Choice and the latter with the Golden Globe for lead actor (comedy or musical).

I'd like to think that since it's actors only that Austin wins due to actors should appreciate the most how long he studied and how much he immersed himself, as well as not only playing a real person, and the most iconic person, but also three different eras, on stage and off

Heavily favoured by the critics. They've had their say and now the people who work in the industry are having theirs.

A few thoughts on the Academy Awards.

"Elvis" has yet to win any major awards for Picture. Still, it's nice to know it's nominated for all major awards in that category. That being said, I'm not going to completely give up hope for the Oscar. Here's why:

There's always a chance that Austin's success as actor can sway voters towards the film, at least enough to move it higher on the ballots that are based on the plurality voting system.

What I'm thinking though, and more realistically hoping for, is that the Academy at least goes with Austin to give the movie and Baz validation.

However, it's interesting that No movie has won a major award twice this season. The Critics Choice went with Everything Everywhere All At Once and didn't even nominate All Quiet On The Western Front, while the BAFTAs chose All Quiet on the Western Front, with The Golden Globes selecting for Drama The Fabelmans and not nominating Western Front either, and giving Musical or Comedy to Banshees of Inisherin over Everything Everywhere All At Once.

Elvis hasn't won yet, but with no film winning twice thus far, and with Elvis not missing a single nomination, who knows?

The plurality voting the Academy uses for Picture also gives Elvis better odds than with the other Award ballots. The Oscars have also had some history with upsets.

I have not ruled out the possibility of Elvis winning the Best Picture award either. It seems like that category is wide open now. I really do not think there is a prohibitive favorite. Austin Butler is now the favorite to win the Best Actor award according to Variety, so the BAFTA win has moved the needle in Austin's favor. I now expect the Elvis movie to secure 3 to 5 Oscar wins next month.

Just read this which I hope helps Austin

"One of the reasons the BAFTAs are such a good way to predict the winners of the Oscars is that they're voted for by a lot of the same people. You can apply to become a member of BAFTA if you work anywhere in the entertainment industry (and are willing to pay £450 a year in fees), and the list includes plenty of Americans who work on British films, and vice versa."

I just read that regardless of what happens at the SAGs the BAFTAs is the big indicator

How Will The 2023 BAFTA Award Winners Impact The Oscar ...Nest Best Picture - Amy Smith

    “Elvis” Has Entered The Building

For Colin Farrell to stay in the Best Actor race, he needed to win at BAFTA on his home turf. However, BAFTA awarded Best Leading Actor to Austin Butler for “Elvis,” another film that won four awards last night. Of those four awards, “Elvis” also won Best Makeup & Hairstyling and Casting, two of which cemented the love for Austin Butler alongside his Best Leading Actor win. Previously, the Best Casting award has been given to one shining casting choice, and in the case of “Joker,” it would go to the film that would eventually win for Joaquin Phoenix at both the BAFTAs and the Oscars. This is an apparent show of strength for a biopic performance that is incredibly flashy and will have the additional support of a potential Best Makeup and Hairstyling Oscar win to match the transformative approach taken by Butler. While we still have to wait and see what SAG does, this was a huge win for Butler in a fiercely competitive Best Actor race. Brendan Fraser could still win at SAG for “The Whale,” but the lack of a Best Picture nomination for Darren Aronofsky’s film hurts his chances at Oscar, considering he’s now lost the Golden Globe and the BAFTA. Unless Colin Farrell surprisingly rebounds at SAG (which would be odd considering he couldn’t pull out a victory here), Austin Butler is the current frontrunner to take the Oscar next month.

    From Vanity Fair:

"The BAFTAs matter greatly in terms of the Oscar race for a few reasons. The membership overlaps somewhat with the Academy’s. Voting on the winners is similar in system to the Oscars, which is to say, a wide range of film professionals—actors, sound mixers, casting agents, writers—vote in all of the main categories after nominations were selected by craft-specific branches.
Colin Farrell may be out of the running for best actor, as that BAFTA prize went instead to Austin Butler.
Butler’s Elvis is clearly beloved enough to take the young breakout all the way. I’d bet on him winning SAG at this stage before a fairly clean march to Oscar. He didn’t need to win here, necessarily, but he did anyway"
