Elvis Presley - The Albums and Singles Thread pt2 The Sixties

The solo version of Today, Tomorrow, and Forever is the obligatory bland ballad of the soundtrack for me, but the Ann-Margret duet is magical. She may not have been a great vocalist, but there's a quiet beauty about her singing on this song that meshes perfectly with Elvis' voice. The slower tempo and different key (?) also work wonders.

The Lady Loves Me is pure cheese, but I love it anyway. I'm still not sure why Elvis' character thought it was a good idea to climb up to the diving board with his guitar in hand, but it made for an amusing (if predictable) finish.

The Yellow Rose Of Texas is a fun throwaway, what with the I've Been Working On The Railroad melody and the hokey screaming in the background. Not a great song, or even a great performance, but something about it always makes me smile. There's a charming moment during the recording of If I Were You, where Elvis starts off by singing "there's a yellow rose in Texas, da da da..." The FTD puts it in its correct, chronological place, but I prefer the mix on Essential Elvis Vol. 4, and I like the way they use it as a direct lead-in to take 5. Even if it's not historically accurate, the final result sounds attractive and spontaneous. No idea what made Elvis think of the song at the time, but that just makes the moment all the more intriguing.

And I'll bet it was Elvis himself who wanted to hear the Jordanaires come in that strong. It is a little jarring at first, but I kind of like hearing their voices sing out so prominently for a change. They were a rather stellar group of harmony singers.

 

I think "C'Mon Everybody" is a great song, easily the best straightahead rocker he'd released since "Devil in Disguise" (not that there was much in the way of competition, I'll admit). Legitimate rock-n-roll is something that would be in short supply on upcoming Elvis records, so it's nice to have this. As I said before, with the departure of Don Robertson and the impending departure of Otis Blackwell, the emergence of Bob "Joy Byers" Johnston was one of the few bright spots in the Elvis songwriting corps around this time.

I'm gonna go against the grain and say I prefer the record version of this track, if for no other reason than I prefer his phrasing on the line "I was raised with a guitar in my hand" on that version. I wonder why they did two versions of this one, anyway?

 

The Climb
So obviously Elvis isn't singing this, but it is part of the movie and certainly worth inclusion on the album. Live albums had tracks where The Stamps would sing a song, so I don't see the inclusion of the climb to be problematic. Anyhow, it's a cool little song.

Elvis again goes toe to toe with Mario Lanza. This track is somewhat like incidental music and stays fairly straight, but it is pleasurable none the less.

Elvis is singing the backing vocals on this song (along with the Jordanaires). He can be heard more clearly on some of the outtakes on the FTD.

 

Santa Lucia is not a serious attempt to make a record. Like "Yellow Rose of Texas" it is a novelty song, tied to a specific scene in the movie, and Elvis sings in an over-the-top manner. It's the type of thing that is okay on a complete soundtrack album, but when it appeared on a "regular" Elvis album like Elvis For Everyone, it tended to make him look bad, because it's not a very good song/performance and it comes across as barrel scraping.

 

Well RCA squandered For The Asking and then they had to "barrel scrape" to come up with a studio album a little over a year later! We will get to this later, but I really like Elvis For Everyone and I play it far more often than I do Something For Everybody or Pot Luck.

 

This thread nudged me to look for a copy of Something for Everybody on vinyl. finally found one yesterday, for $4. Some really great playing on it. It might be Elvis's most underrated album. And 11 of the songs were recorded in 1 day. it's one of the few Elvis albums that really sounds like an album, not just a random selection of his songs.

 

And it is beautifully recorded. But it is quite bland compared to Elvis Is Back.

 

Agreed. Something for Everybody is a nice novelty for my ears though, since i've admired Elvis is Back for decades.

 

Unfortunately it's sequenced terribly.

 

I think Something For Everybody is a terrific album, particularly when you add the hit singles to it as the Legacy or FTD version does. One of the most overlooked gems in Elvis's entire studio album catalogue.

 

doesn't bother me, although i would prefer they'd left off " I slipped..." Sounds a little out of place .

 

As I said earlier in the thread, I can't think of a single album that works well using the "ballads on one side/rockers on the other" formula. It invariably makes for a stilted listen.

This is another nice little Rock And Roll song. I love the feel of it, and Elvis seems to be into it. Probably a good choice to start the EP. I think the sequencing on this recreated LP is great and really keeps things moving nicely.

This track has a bar in the early hours sound. I could hear Dean Martin Or Frank Sinatra doing something like this track. I think Elvis gives the track a really nice feel, with the vocal sitting nicely with the barroom jazz/blues piano feel of the song. He also has nice phrasing here, which is very easy to mess up on this kind of song.

 

His Latest Flame and Little Sister would elevate any Elvis album. But they could not have been included in Something For Everybody even if they wanted to back in the day. Because they each were recorded AFTER the LP came out.
