Anyplace Is Paradise September 2nd 1956 was a fantastic day of recording and this track comes from that session. This is a somewhat ignored gem. I love this song. It has a beautiful strut, with a closer link to blues than country. The lead break starts off with the classic double stop lead lick style then moves into a nice little blues motif. The vocal is filled with style and swagger and really works to bring this song to life. We have a nice piece of piano come in towards the end, that steps out and lets the rhythm section have some time to hold the fort and it does that very well ... a very nice use of space ... We have a great melody, a great beat, a great lead break, a nice piano lead , a great vocal and all the ingredients set this up to be a great song. I love it. Except for the fact that there were so many strong songs recorded around this time, it is hard to believe that this has no tv performance, or any other kind of performance that I can find.

I agree. I've often thought that Elvis' 50s music is too often critiqued today solely through the lens of 'race' which leaves him exposed to accusations of cultural appropriation (complete bollocks imho). Evaluated through the lens of 'class', you get a way different, more complex picture and one that's too often overlooked. Elvis and his contemporaries' breakthrough in the 50s was a reflection of what was going all over the Western world at the time - a breaking down of class barriers and unprecedented social mobility. Growing up in the milieu of "musical expressionism", Elvis would have been totally unprepared for the frenzied reaction to his music on one hand - and the backlash from critics. But he handled both very well.
Elvis: this album doesn't really get cookin' until "Paralyzed". The first five tracks are pretty ho-hum. Regarding "Rip It Up", I like the Everly Brothers versions the best. It has great harmonies. "Love Me": the song isn't too special, and I don't like how Elvis slurs the notes so much. "Long Tall Sally": lots of better versions out there with Beatles and what have you. Way too much echo on "First In Line".
How's The World Treating You A slow Ballad with a blues tint to it, this song is another great song that has a nice feel to it. Again we have a very good emotive vocal from Elvis. The music on this track is quite minimalist and suits the feel of the song perfectly.
On December 15th 1956 Elvis played Louisiana Hayride, Hirsch Youth Center, Louisiana Fairgrounds, Shreveport LA The setlist Heartbreak Hotel Long Tall Sally I Was The One Love Me Tender Don't Be Cruel Love Me I Got A Woman When My Blue Moon Turns To Gold Again Paralysed Hound Dog I reckon that would have been a very cool show to see
