    The Jungle Room Sessions
This is one of the first FTD's I heard. One of the first sessions I heard .... and to be honest the chatty parts are probably as interesting to me as the music. We will be going through Way Down In The Jungle Room fully when we get there, but this isn't going to mess anything up, by putting it here.
One of the things that makes this really kind of special to me, is having finally gone through Graceland, last year?, and seeing where this was all actually recorded ... I had never really been particularly interested in the whole Graceland tour thing to be honest, but the opportunity came along, and while we were doing the thread... it seemed relevant ... anyway, when I saw where they recorded this, I was kind of just looking at the place and wondering how they were set up. It was really interesting, and strangely kind of special to me .... and I am not really a touristy, or even celebrity driven type of person .... weird. anyway.
If you go to 1:07:37 that is where Fire Down Below, and America the Beautiful are.

Fire Down Below sounds great - were there lyrics to sing that Elvis never got around to? Or was this the band having fun while waiting for Elvis to turn up?

Elvis never got around to overdub the vocal, but the song has lyrics.

I like what Sony/BMG did with the Complete Masters box set and the complete album collection. I also like what audiophile labels like ORG, Speaker's Corner, and AP have done with some of the "major" Elvis lp's. Plus, the FTD releases for hard core fans. The only thing remaining, imo, is an "Immersive" box set of the Aloha 1973 concerts. The mix is flat and has no life. It sounds like the TV feed with a little bit of stereo separation. I'm not certain if the shows were recorded on 12, 16, or 24 tracks. However, the mix and new mastering would greatly improve the set. Back in the 90's, BMG released the Alternate Aloha CD of the rehearsal show. The show was newly mixed and had punch and life. So hopefully a 50th anniversary set is in the works for 2023.

That is how Jan Berry wanted it and recorded it - in his garage using two tape recorders. The full band was overdubbed later and Jan added even more reverb then for the result that was released then. (There is an official synced "stereo" version with the full originally released version on one channel and the overdubbed band alone on the other channel.)
Somewhat different than someone adding improper reverb 40 years after recording.

RCA/BMG released a remix of Aloha in 1998. Not to say it can't be improved on but it is certainly a different listening experience than the original album mix...

The Aloha remix from ‘98 sounds amazing compared to original album. That being said I think they could create a new slightly improved version nowadays along with the pre-aloha concert.. hopefully for the 50th anniversary along with a bluray?

I'm pretty sure Aloha was recorded on 8 tracks, and was recorded with the intention of releasing it in quadraphonic, a recording setup somewhat different than recording on 8 tracks for a stereo release.
The original release of "Alternate Aloha" was IMHO absolutely terrible since Elvis was mixed so low he could barely be heard, and early digital trickery was used. Yuck. BMG even sent out a tiny number of promo cassettes with comparisons of excerpts of the original (not "Alternate") songs and equivalent excerpts from the new Alternate release, and in listening to that cassette I could only wonder what that "producer" guy was smoking and snorting.

One of the first FTDs I bought, a year or so after its release. Was fascinating at the time to hear Elvis at this stage of his life recording in his house and without later overdubs. As others have said, this is where FTD really started delivering the goods.

I didn't mean to imply that it didn't sound exactly as Jan Berry wanted it. I just can't figure why he'd want the lead vocals buried like that. Thanks for pointing out the stereo version. I just gave it a listen. Much, much better.

The outtakes. The dialogue is dry but the singing is so full of reverb

I had the opposite reaction. I found the '98 remix to be surprisingly timid. After the Legacy Edition was released, that became my go-to version because the remaster is warm and inviting. I am still hopeful that someone like Vic Anesini gets a shot at a fresh remix for a FTD reissue.

Santos and Rosenthal did a pretty job remixing the January 12 concert on the Legacy Edition. I am skeptical that a new remix will offer much improvement.

It’s easy for me to visit Graceland, because it’s not far away, but I agree that it is worth a visit for any serious Elvis fan. To see in person the ideal of luxury of someone who grew up dirt poor sheds some light on the man, I think.

In his final four years or so, Elvis was routinely failing to deliver the amount of finished masters he was contractually obligated to prroduce (it seems to have been a passive-aggressive game on his part due to his anger at both the Colonel and RCA). Producer Felton Jarvis was so desperate to get Elvis to reord more that throughout Spring 1977 he dragged around the backing track for Fire Down Below with Elvis on tour, hoping that one night he might persuade Elvis to record a vocal. He was not successful. That's why they ended up having to pad out the Moody Blue album with live tracks.

That pretty much sums up the Jungle Room.

But, if Elvis hadn’t grown up in the trailer park, or, more precisely, in its 50s equivalent - the shotgun shack he was born in is worth a visit to Tupelo, if just to get some glimpse of the grim reality he was born into - I highly doubt he would have become “Elvis.”

Cool. It is still far from flawless, but I just don't think the '98 remix really improved on the original mix, and as previously stated, you get a nice Anesini remastering on the Legacy Edition. A great Aloha mix doesn't exist (although as @RSteven has pointed out in the past, the remix from the 2004 DVD is good), and perhaps there never will be one, but fans can hold out hope that Ernst commissions another remix for a FTD reissue by a first-rate engineer that understands Elvis Presley concerts.

Sorry to jump ahead, but I know that this is the place to ask Elvis-related questions.
A relatively reasonably priced copy of the 2016 2CD Elvis on Television 1956-1960 has come up - can anyone comment on the sound quality and book?
I'm still amazed that Legacy hasn't put out a version with a bonus dvd/blu ray of the surviving footage - I know that the great Elvis '56 dvd has a lot of the performances, but certainly not all.
