Well one thing that tells me, is that the the reasons I was cautious about buying it were valid, because it certainly wouldn't have any sort of real 5.1 mix..... There were just too many of those fake 5.1's when the format first appeared, that joined with the stupidity of Song and Warner sunk the format for the larger audience from the start.,

This appears to be a compile from just looking at it. It is a good collection of tracks, and again with the soundboard recording, the instrument balance isn't the best. I am not against that at all, often it can actually give you a different perspective on the shows.
I don't have this one either, and for the most part it sounds ok.
I like the two Trouble's back to back. I like the selection of songs, but I am not sure that this one would tweak my interest enough to purchase.

If these are all the original mono versions, I assume that they would certainly appeal to many folks. For me have to change discs every four minutes would be annoying, but these kind of sets seem to have done well for quite a few people.
Obviously the songs are wonderful, but this isn't a set up that would suit my listening style.

Anyway, please give us your input in regards to this set, and whether it delivered.

    Cheers

No need to apologise @mark winstanley! You're doing a great job keeping this thread going mate plus those MRS releases, despite often nicking their material from official titles, are still legal offerings in many parts of town.

Southern Nights is an interesting one that was released as a sort of companion to Dixieland Rocks. Back then, Ernst was on record as saying FTD probably wouldn't revisit Elvis' spring 1975 tours again so it was a good idea to collect rarities and somewhat interesting / unusual performances from those two road trips.

There's not too much duplication between Southern Nights and Dixieland Rocks and I'd argue that these two CDs are the best of Elvis' live show during this period. Officially or otherwise, there's a ton of CDs available!

Unfortunately for me, Southern Nights reads better than it plays. Every track, save the snatch of Jambalaya arguably, is available elsewhere in a superior live version. The two spring tours of 1975 tend to be overrated, or at least that's how I feel. Elvis was quite disinterested on stage and wasn't in the best voice as can be heard on a lot of the tracks here. His good humour doesn't mask the deficiencies in his vocal presentation. He was better weeks earlier in Vegas. Perhaps being in larger auditoriums, surrounded by screaming fans made him feel he could take his foot off the gas compared to the more intimate environment of the Hilton, where there was less space to hide. Plus, he wasn't in great shape so really shouldn't have been on stage.

What is good with Southern Nights is because it's drawn from several shows, you're not faced with the usual See See Rider, I Got A Woman / Amen, divebombs, Love Me, If You Love Me......lame oldies plus maybe Burning Love........ long intros....few songs.....Can't Help Falling In Love format.

I agree, and to add on, I don't think the sequencing does it any favours. The song selection feels completely random. It's pretty dull on a sonic level as well. Generally speaking, I quite enjoy the 1975 shows, but I could do without Southern Nights.

Here we have another of the extended album selections, and it is the Loving You movie. In some ways this is a bizarre disc 1 is marvelous with the great original album and some outtakes, which fortunately RCA didn't throw out.... disc 2 is somewhat OTT with 48 takes of Loving You the song in mono and binaural. We also get some extra tracks from singles etc.
I am not altogether sure many folks are going to sit and listen to Loving You 48 times, but it is there for us nonetheless. At least it isn't like the first couple of albums and the Sun recordings where a lot of the takes were thrown away.

Please give us the low down on this one, and if you have listened to the 48 takes of Loving You, please give us your input about that whole scenario :)

    Cheers

Man, do I love that first disc. The second one is a lorra lorra Loving You and I don't think I've ever played it through, although I quite enjoy the swing of the fast versions I've heard over the years.

That CD is a precursor to the sessions sets of today. I prefer this to a 1976 soundboard.

As far as I'm concerned, the alt master of I Beg Of You IS the master.

I don't own this one, but I always chuckle when I see the tracklisting for Disc 2. At least it looks like all of the takes are indexed onto separate tracks, which is what they should have done for all of the FTDs (not to mention the Complete Sessions set).

Loving You FTD reminds us that FTD is a collector's label. No casual fan in their right mind would want 48 takes of Loving You. But the goal was to beat the boots here. If you were a casual fan who only wanted disc one you then could buy the bargain-priced 2005 DSD expanded remaster of Loving You, which featured the exact-same Kevan Budd remastering and most of the same tracks.

I've braved disc 2. It was a challenge, no denying it and I love those 50's outtakes. One day, I may even do it again!
Disc 1 is a good all rounder for the Loving You soundtrack, I was really surprised by the alternate 'Mean Woman Blues' as I initially assumed from the opening it was going to be lifted directly from the soundtrack but no, it was an alternate take - the usual master is the better take, no doubt about it but it's still good to have...

  15. I bought this and was very disappointed in the sound quality. The so-called from the Sun Mother Master That’s All Right vinyl in particular sounds abysmal, and it was the main reason I bought this set. It sounds more like someone tried to artificially take out the added reverb via a computer, at least to my ears.

After learning it was a boot, I was pretty certain that would be the case. 5.1 would be my only interested in it, and bootleg 5.1 has no choice but to be rubbish.

  17. It’s technically not a boot but so as not to derail the thread I’ll leave it there :)

Interestingly enough, in the early years, Ernst had said FTD was not intended to be a "sessions" vehicle; however, when it came to certain sessions/albums, clearly exceptions were made. I am not sure if the idea here was to beat the boots (although that certainly was a byproduct at the very least), rather I think Ernst admired the artistry of Elvis' 1950's work and felt presenting a session of this magnitude was worthy of release. Budd's work on the entire FTD release was first-rate. This is definitely one of the premier classic album series releases ever issued by FTD.

Agreed. This release always looked better on paper because the actual quality of the recorded performances leaves a lot to be desired. The bottom line is Elvis' mid-1975 live work was unremarkable, and even with a sequencing of unique and interesting song titles, Elvis isn't really able to deliver. That said, I thought this format would have been ideal for a number of 1976 tours -- cut out the concert bloat and issue a disc of highlights and rarities.

Another good set of songs, and I guess perhaps the DSD remastering is worth the difference ... they should probably have been sacd's though

To some degree, this album is a little bit different to the others. It isn't really a gospel album, and thematically it ends up having an interesting selection of tracks, that just wouldn't generally be grouped together.
So on that level it is a fairly interesting collection.
It still wouldn't be likely to grab my attention, but I can see that it may be a disc to grab the attention of the Elvis fan, who just picks up the odd album here and there.

I actually really love the Elvis Rock and Elvis Country comps (I don't have the Inspirational title). They sound great, and the track selection/sequencing is fantastic. Elvis Country is much better than Great Country Songs, imo. Snowbird and Tomorrow Never Comes are presented without the crossfades; I think they're the original mixes, but I'm not positive.

Chiming in a bit late here. I do own this release, and here are my thoughts:

    1. The main reason to have gotten this set is the 45, which has the A side of Sun 209. It sounds like it's indeed made from Sun parts. There's no chamber echo, and it sounds like a Sun 45 ought to sound (for better and worse). There's some noise, presumably because of stamper damage. I don't find that distracting -- unlike the surface noise on Vol. 2's "Mystery Train," which is just horrible. In the end, I'm glad I own the set for the 45 alone.

    2. I would *guess* that the source for the 10 Sun sides on the DVD-A (including "That's All Right") are mint Sun 78s, except for "I Don't Care If the Sun Don't Shine," which appears to be sourced from a truncated version of the tape that's on the Bop Cat 101 bootleg LP, "Good Rockin' Tonight." I find that exception negatively to affect the set's integrity, because it would have been nice to have transfers of all 10 Sun 78 sides in one place, which doesn't elsewhere exist so far as I know in the Elvis catalog. I don't listen to the Sun sides as an alternative to the most recent BMG releases of the same versions, but I do find it nice from time to time to imagine I'm listening to transfers of the Sun 78s.
