Been spending lots of time with this album Erik Andresen Quartet GIP – Jazzaggression Records
I have a few releases on this Jazz Aggression label which have been consistently strong. This one--the Erik Andresen Quartet—is from Norway circa 1969/70. Kicks off with a bop-ish tune but then settles into largely post-bop/modal grooves including great takes on Joe Henderson’s “Inner Urge”, Wayne Shorter’s “Footprints”...they tackle some Ornette, Phil Woods, Charles Lloyd and a number of really strong originals. Jazz Aggression released a 12” studio LP and a 10” with 2 additional tracks from the NRK radio archives with a different keyboard player, both of which contain download cards for the ENTIRE contents of both releases, and the 12” has a CD containing everything as well. You hear so much about these obscure records on obscure labels that end up being notable just because they’re obscure...this one is actually REALLY great.
