Genesis: "I did create CD masters for all --or almost all-- of the Genesis albums not long after I left Atlantic in the late '80s. Since I never received copies of pressings, I do not know if any of the masters I sent were ever used for CD production." - BD.

    To answer Fireball's questions:

    1. Yes, I did the original CD release for "Too Fast For Love".

    2. The reason I did the rest of the Zep catalog but not "IV" is that before Atlantic started its CD mastering department (i.e. yours truly), the earliest Atlantic CDs were done by Joe Sidore at Warner in L.A.. Zep "IV" was among those early Atlantic CDs.

By the time Atlantic decided to do more Zep CDs, we'd already established the CD mastering department (i.e. gear was purchased and yours truly assigned to be its operator).

    Best regards,

So, since I don't know how to pull ricks' table of masterings for U2's War from the first version of this thread, this might be a bit confusing.

I bought the Island 422 811 CD version, and--mind you, this is on laptop speakers, since my CD player's broken--I prefer it over the P35D on just the track "Sunday Bloody Sunday." The cymbals seems less upfront (which I like) on this disc than they are on the P35D. I used to have the MFSL, but sold it, so I can't compare.

I only compared that one song because I eventually will burn a U2 hits CD-R for myself, because their albums never really hooked me. So I will not be reporting on other differences out of sheer, selfish laziness. Well, ok, maybe I'll listen to "New Year's Day" too...

If anyone wants to see the table I speak of, they can visit the "Part 1" Essential Barry Diament Masterings thread. It's on more than one page, but the last page is a sure-fire place to find it.

And, Mr. Diament, are you interested in hearing this Island 422 811 disc to see if it's your work? If yes, let me know in this thread and we can get some PMs going, and if not, feel free to ignore me! :righton:

    Hi warren,

    Thank you for the offer.
I would do my best but after more than a quarter century, it might not be so easy to tell. It would be easier if I'd received the original mixes to master this one from, instead of the EQ'd limited tape I got.

    Best regards,

I am really interested in buying cq orderings some albums of that list of Barry Diament mastered albums. The problem for Europeans is that many of them is only easy to find in America; I really would like to order 'Head on the Door' of the Cure at Amazon.com, but I don't like to gamble which of the many is the right one of Diament...

Would it be possible for someone, considering all the different issues of some albums, to put also the right years of mastering at that list? :help: (I know it's not easy)

Why not set up a WTB ad in the classifieds? I am sure someone in the states could help you out.

    Hi Barry,
Yes I know. But a year of (re)mastering is giving me a certain point of starting the search: in that case I know I don't have to look for all the issues before that year....

I suspect this has been covered, but is it safe to say that aside from the Page/Marino remaster, all other versions of "Houses Of The Holy" contain Barry's mastering?

I picked up a West German CD pressing of AC/DC Back in Black. Is this the same mastering as the domestic Atlantic and is it a BD mastering?

    thanks

For years, I was of the opinion that my original West German target cd of the Eagles "Long Run" was "the one" (not mastered by Barry). I still think it is fabulous overall, but a couple of days ago, I had some extra time and decided to pull out my Barry version and load both versions into my wav. editing program (Sony Soundforge) to take a look, but more importantly, a listen. Boy, was I in for a shock! I just want to apologize to Barry for even thinking the foolish thought that the WG was better. The BD version was fabulous! Cleaner, bigger, broader, smoother and definitely with better seperation and detail. Very similar to comparing Phil Collins "Face Value" of Barry's work vs. the original version. I will never doubt you again Barry and I am smacking my wrist for being an idiot :)

I am hard pressed to find a counter version to Barry's work which I prefer, I will have to ponder that for a while.....
