The Genesis catalog is the one of the worst to wrap your head around, as far as good/best CD mastering. What makes it difficult, IMO, is the low signal-to-noise ratio in most threads. I've settled on these, but I think they can be swapped out (for same or just barely different quality, IMHO) by one version or another. Trespass - DADC Austria, Collector's Edition Picture Discs Nursery Cryme - DADC Austria, Collector's Edition Picture Discs Foxtrot - DADC Austria, Collector's Edition Picture Discs (any of the above can be swapped for UK/Japan VC versions) Selling England by the Pound - Japan Virgin/Charisma VJCP-23117 (or black triangle? or UK VC?) The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway - Made in Japan (Sanyo), Virgin CGSCD 1 A Trick of the Tail - old US Atco (Mastered by Barry Diament) Wind & Wuthering - Japan (Sanyo) for US Seconds Out - Made in the UK by Nimbus, Virgin GECD 2001 ...And Then There Were Three... - Made in the UK by Nimbus, Virgin Charisma CDSCD 4010 Duke - Made in Japan, Atlantic 16014-2 (Diament but not sure?) Abacab - Made in W. Germany by PolyGram, Virgin "Blue Face" CBRCD 102 Genesis - Made in England (EMI Swindon) Virgin GENCD1 (I think US Atco is just as good) Invisible Touch - Japan Virgin/Charisma VJD-32011 (I think US Atco is just as good) Most of these have equivalent mastering on other presses, so I suggest looking at @Black Elk 's Genesis CD thread. He has them summarized very nicely.
You're welcome! This was the thread I was talking about: http://forums.stevehoffman.tv/threads/genesis-early-cd-versions-thread-ver-2.149728/
I have the WG Target for Foreigner - Double Vision. This title is supposed to be mastered by Barry Diament, but looking at the insert it says Mastered By - George Marino/Sterling Sound. Is this a leftover from the the LP, or how can one be sure that Barry did this CD?
In another thread today, it came up that someone wanted to know if they had the best mastering of Eagles Greatest Hits 2. I suggested that Diament's was the best, but then quickly realized that we don't have a way to identify it. I then thought that we don't have a way to identify many of Diament's masterings. So I thought I would mention this idea here, so that we can discuss if this thread, or perhaps a new one, would be the best place to begin to clarify how people can identify and find these wonderfully mastered CDs by Barry Diament.
When he was still active here I asked him about it. Post 174 Probably the best KMFDM ever sounded Actually Money is another good sounding disc

Money is what got me into KMFDM. Years later, I purchased the remaster and it didn't bring back any of the nostalgia. I tracked down the original version and it put me right back in my teen years.

Perhaps a little nitpicking, but I wonder if the live portion of G N' R Lies was also mastered using the original master tapes as it was previously released as an e.p. on a different label. Just wondering for metadata purposes.
Thanks for the recent updates @George P . Can't think of any other thread that I refer back to as often as this one!
That different label, Uzi Suicide, was nothing more than a made-up label from Geffen to make it look like an independent release.
Sorry, I know this is weird that I'm replying to my own comment, but I'm not sure I can say that PV was done by Barry. I was listening to it earlier and I noticed that it was sort of loud and trebbly.
I'm no Diament expert, but the Rapture album by Anita Baker is lovely. I think Diament did the CD and Bernie Grundman the original LP album, but I am happy to be corrected. Anyway, they both sound great.
I'd like to add Kevin Eubanks -- Sundance to Diament's work. Details below: Sundance [CD][1984 GRP {Barry Diament}][DIDX 42][JP for US] GRP-D-9506, DIDX 42 Pressing: CSR JP (Oct 1982-1988) Mastered By [Compact Disc Master Tape Preparation]: Barry Diament Mastered By [LP]: Ted Jensen EAC: 98.6 / 90.0 / 100.0 / 100.0 / 100.0 / 100.0 / 100.0 / 55.6 Barcode: none Matrix / Runout: DIDX-45 11A4 Hub logo: CSR Repeating Label Country: Made In Japan Label Series: DIDX 42; GRP silverface; Digital Master I believe that "Compact Disc Master Tape Preparation" by Barry Diament in the credits implies Barry mastered the CD vs. Jensen the LP. Does anyone else want to weigh in on this atypical credit?
