I beg to differ, the heading is "Essential Barry Diament masterings", how can they be essential if we don't know if they were released? But I am nit picking, you can ignore me.

Since I never received copies of pressings, I do not know if any of the masters I sent were ever used for CD production." - BD Led Zeppelin: "The difference is that most of the Zeps (with the exception of "In Through The Out Door" and "Coda" were from flat copies and not EQ'd Limited copies." - BD Genesis: "The Genesis (at least the ones I did when I was still at Atlantic, were mostly from EQ'd limited tapes but were to my ears, better done than the Nicks EQ'd limited tapes - and probably the mixes as well. (I hear the "cold edge" too - but would assign it a lower frequency than you did, perhaps around 5 - 8k.)" - BD AC/DC: "AC/DC's "Back In Black" and "For Those About To rock" were from untouched original mixes." - BD Bob Marley: "And all of the Marleys were from originals - no one's EQ or limiting for me to contend with." - BD
Too late, princesskiki...I have already been committed to an asylum due to the mental anguish over this
Thanks for checking! I appreciate your work. Your pressing history of the Face Value CD is interesting and a valuable read for me. When reading the HF thread I referenced above, I did come across the 93.3 EAC value you referenced in your post early in the thread. It appears to be the Canadian Cinram version with a level shift down. The original clipping present on the Diament mastering is also present on the Cinram and present at EAC values of less than 100%, an oddity. It seems likely the the timeline for the Cinram version is later.
Why would this - level shifted down - be done...is this common for CD...I always thought it to be the opposite?! Are there any sonic advantages?
Not sure. I wish I knew more on the subject. Perhaps someone else can comment. Now if I were to speculate what those Canadians might have done, perhaps it is as simple as they performed a level shift down due the 100% values of two of the tracks. Again... pure speculation.
Thanks...I would be interested to know/understand why this would be done, too! Maybe it will remain to be another of life's mysteries!?
Anyone has an ASIN for Roberta Flack - Killing Me Softly? It seems I can only find remasters on Amazon.
Simply because peaks reaching the 100% digital value have a risk of producing audible clipping on some systems.
Thanks, Plan9...so, it's possible a CD - in this case the Canadian pressing of 'Face Value' - could sound *better* simply because of the reduced peak levels?
It's *possible*. Although it depends on if there is clipping and if it is audible in the first place. My guess is not.
the whole catalogue mastered by Barry sounds wonderful and can be found fairly cheap if you are patient and resourceful. a worthy investment of time/money. i'm not an expert on all the available marley pressings... but if u have 1) all the diaments 2) the AF SACD for a good collection of the early "grey market-ish" stuff and 3) the deluxe "Catch a Fire" for the original Jamaican mix... i can't imagine you'll want for any Marley.
Well put. The vintage Diament masters of the Marley / Wailers CD catalog is essential and cheap listening.
I just bought a used copy of Hello, I Must Be Going! by Phil Collins and was hoping someone may be able help me identify if it's Diament mastering or not. Atlantic Records Catalog Number: 80035-2 Bar Code: 07567-80035-2 Matrix: 3 80035-2 SRC+15 The bottom of the disc says "MADE IN USA BY WEA MANUFACTURING INC" The back of the Jewel Case says "Printed in USA" Not a target CD. Silver with a red and black outer ring. The album cover says: INCLUDES I DON'T CARE ANY MORE AND YOU CAN'T HURRY LOVE in the bottom right corner.
Working on getting all the Diament Bob Marley discs. So far I have: Legend Rebel Music Kaya Uprising Exodus Survival Live Catch A Fire Natty Dread
Just picked up Ivan Neville's "Thanks" CD... sounds great, and interestingly, it's not available on Tidal or Spotify. @George P Thanks for maintaining this list!
I will add two things: 1) I’ve never heard Uprising sound as good as it does on the 1982 vinyl Box set that was limited to 10,000 copies 2) If you have 5.1, the Clearmountain surround mix of Exodus alone is worth seeking out the Blu-ray audio release of Legend (30th Anniversary, not the rubbish High Fidelity Pure Audio version) I have all the Diament masterings of the Tuff Gong / Island Studio albums from ‘73 on and they certainly all sound magical.
