His cover of "Getting Better" was also very good.

Might not be better, but a great version nevertheless

I can't agree with it, though. EWF did a nice reinvention of the song and didn't try to clone it, but that biting brass arrangement in the original still blows it away.

The Mamas and Papas' "I Call Your Name" comes about the closest for me.

I love the Fiona Apple, across the universe from Pleasantville, I may be in the minority though

Esther Phillips, And I Love Him. Don't think this one's been mentioned yet. Reputedly she was less than thrilled being asked to record it, "What the Frick kinda song is this, Ahmet?' But she sure sounds like she knows what it's about. And the Beatles liked it well enough to pay here air fare to the UK for a TV special.

I listen to Earth Wind & Fire's Got to Get You Into My Life regularly. I never listen to the Beatles version. I just...don't like it. EW&F did it up - the arrangements are intricate and expansive compared to the original, and the groove is phenomenal.

Really like the drum beat (that is obviously based on the original) and the urgency of this cover:

Ray Charles's version of "Eleanor Rigby" is amazing, but I don't think it replaces the original. It soulfully adds to the original. You have to know them both to know what it adds.

Another vote for Sonic Youth's "Within You Without You". They managed to turn what I feel is a fairly dull song into something really cool.

Yes cover of "Every Little Thing". Original is a bit flaccid...

I like a lot of Beatles covers, but I'd say the only 2 that I like better than the originals are Stevie Wonder's version of We Can Work it Out, and Joe Cocker's version of With a Little Help From My Friends.

I prefer the Stones slide guitar and rocking conviction of I Wanna Be Your Man.

I was the same as you, until this year it finally got into my life.
However, I will listen to EWF.
