I was never much of a country fan but do like a country tune from time to time. There's one coming up in 1987 that I really like! I also loved Mickey Gilley's rendition of Stand By Me from 1980, in addition to Kenny Rogers, Dolly Parton, etc.

I know this has been discussed before but the country charts really worked differently that any other chart - notably with the constant revolving door at No. 1 every week. (The song I was referring to in 1987 actually had more than one week on top!) It was odd for a country song to get as high as No. 2 and not make the final step.

I love seeing the picture sleeves and labels for a genre I didn't really collect that much.

Enjoy him while it lasts. Eventually his new girlfriend convinced him to change his act to please her with leather, motorcycles, and loud rock. It tanked, she left him and the country audience wanted nothing more to do with him. Self destruction of a career as once again recounted in Jimmy Bowen's book.

One of my very favorite Kenny Rogers' songs that became his 12th number one Billboard Country chart topper. Written by Dave Loggins at Kenny's personal request (Can you write me a song like "Something's Burning?"), it also was produced and arranged by The Beatles legendary producer George Martin. A very sexy and smoldering performance is greatly enhanced by a fantastic instrumental outro by jazz guitarist Stanley Jordan at the 3:20 mark. Wow, what a cool record! Many fans might not remember that Kenny started his career in a jazz trio before forming The New Christy Minstrels and The First Edition, and this great single shows off a bit of his jazz chops as well.

I've been checking into this thread faithfully all along, and I'm amazed at how few of the songs I've known. I got much further away from country music during this era than I realized — though I returned to DJ-ing country in April of 1987, so before too long I'll start recognizing things again.

This is one I do know. I liked it a great deal — probably as much as any Alabama song — and I remember playing with the band I used to periodically fill in for when one of their members went on vacation. It's a good one!

Whats funny is that Greatest Hits is the only Alabama CD I have and I don't even recognize it. And I HAD to have heard it multiple times(although not in a while). Weird.

"Now And Forever (You And Me)" by Anne Murray

Wikipedia entry - Ms. Murray's last country #1 to date; on the Hot 100, could only reach a lowly #92 (though it did make #7 on the Adult Contemporary chart). Incidentally, this would be among the last pressings by Capitol's own plants (most copies of this came from Jacksonville, IL); the very month this was released, Capitol would cease manufacturing their own vinyl, subcontracting thereafter to Specialty Records Corp. in Olyphant, PA and Allied Record Co. in Los Angeles (one of the latter's corporate predecessors had handled the label upon its 1942 startup).

This doesn't have a hell of a lot to do with country music, but I have to confess that I like it. I don't dislike her, but I'm not a big Anne Murray fan, and this is perhaps more of a tribute to the songwriters and her production team than to her. However, the final product comes off well.
