I actually remember getting this album when it came out. I was in a Best Buy and saw the album in the CD rack near the cash registers. If memory serves correctly, there was also the then-latest Fall Out Boy album, but I didn't get that and still haven't listened to it in full.
At any rate, The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here is a somewhat decent album that did not need to be an hour long.

Remember My Darkest Days? Young Guns has nothing to do with them as far as I know, but like My Darkest Days, their only entry in the top-10 on Mainstream Rock was a #1 hit. I cannot for the life of me tell you why. Nor can I tell you why we have two songs in a row that peaked at #37 on Hot Rock & Alternative Songs. I can explain why Bones by Young Guns was a Mainstream Rock hit - it was one of the official theme songs for WrestleMania 29.

I'd like to take this opportunity to offer a little insight into the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart. Let's start with how it works. The chart strictly measures airplay on stations specializing in mainstream rock. For a period, Billboard split mainstream rock into two subcategories: "active rock" for new stuff, and "heritage rock" for the older classics. However, since active rock stations can and did play classic rock too, the active and heritage formats were virtually identical by 2013 when Billboard just folded them and had everyone report directly to Mainstream Rock. Rock was already declining in cultural relevance by that point, but this move didn't help. Pop stations started ignoring efforts to cross Mainstream Rock acts over like Alternative Airplay had, which in turn put rock radio into defensive mode, unwilling to explore beyond sure things like Godsmack and Five Finger Death Punch. But perhaps rock radio wanted to prove to some degree that they weren't completely static, which is my theory for how a female act finally hit #1 on Mainstream Rock for the first time in 23 years.

Album: The Strange Case Of... (2012)

Halestorm was formed in Pennsylvania by siblings Lzzy and Arejay Hale. Of course, Lzzy isn't her actual name. Only the drummer and the band's original bassist call her Elizabeth. You see, within the proud tradition of bands formed by siblings exists a subcategory of bands whose former members were other relatives (e.g. Chevelle and Nickelback). But in a twist, Halestorm's original bassist wasn't another brother, but Lzzy and Arejay's dad Roger. I can only hope he still gets them presents for Christmas.
If I'm not mistaken, before Halestorm, Heart held the record for the most top-10 rock hits for a female led group. The record for the most top-10 rock hits for a female solo artist is still held by Pat Benatar, which is fitting. While Lzzy Hale has cited both Heart and Pat Benatar as influences, Lzzy is far more reminiscent of Pat to me. Go watch footage of Lzzy covering Heartbreaker and tell me you don't hear it. Then again, Halestorm did do a cover of Heart's All I Wanna Do Is Make Love To You, so you could probably make a similar argument for Heart's influence.
However, the influence of Pat Benatar and Heart (specifically Heart in the 1980s) also manifest in another aspect of Halestorm's material: outside songwriters. Take Halestorm's 2012 album The Strange Case Of... Its Grammy-winning lead single, Love Bites (So Do I), was co-written by Dave Bassett, who you may remember from his co-writing credits on multiple Shinedown hits. Shinedown's Brent Smith, incidentally, is credited for backing vocals on the album, presumably to return the favor after Lzzy did a song or two with Shinedown. The album's second single, I Miss The Misery, was co-written by Christine Danielle, who you'll remember from her work with her ex-husband's band Theory of a Deadman. So Christine can write good songs - it's her ex-husband who can't. On that note, I neglected to mention that Christine and Tyler Connolly divorced the same year the album with Lowlife came out. Can't say I blame her, though that must've made it awkward when he also showed up to perform backing vocals (as did many other big-name musicians for this album).
But I digress. Love Bites (So Do I) and I Miss The Misery both peaked at #2. It wasn't until the album's third single that Halestorm finally hit #1 on Mainstream Rock, which as I said made them the first female act to do so in 23 years. I suppose if any song was going to end that two-decade gap, it was going to be something from The Strange Case Of... While I personally think it's one of those albums that starts and ends strong but dips a bit in the middle, Lzzy Hale is still an incredible singer and I hear the band puts on an amazing live show. So if you like Pat Benatar or you just generally have a tolerance for glam metal, Halestorm will be right up your alley.

On January 9, 2013, just a few weeks before a scheduled co-headlining tour with Shinedown, Three Days Grace announced Adam Gontier would be leaving the band. No specific reason was given by him or anyone else in the band, but whatever the reason was, Three Days Grace still managed to squeeze two more #1 rock hits out of their last album with Gontier. The High Road was the first of the two.

Agreed that Lzzy sounds more like Pat Benatar than Ann Wilson. Her voice is gruffer than either of them.

At least on Halestorm's second and third albums, Lzzy is credited as co-songwriter on almost every track. OTOH, the majority of Benatar's best-known songs were written by others. (With a couple of notable exceptions, such as "Hell is For Children" and "Fire and Ice".)

For the record: Smashing Pumpkins hit #1 in 1996 with "1979" with (female) bassist D'Arcy Wretzky a member of the band. Obviously Wretzky was far from 'leader' of that band.

PS: I think Halestorm is a pretty cool name for the Hale family band.

It's friggin' amazing they are still at it all these years later.

According to Wikipedia, the lineup that day was Brian Jones, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, keyboardist Ian Stewart, and guitarist Dick Taylor. No Charlie Watts or Bill Wyman just yet.

    Album: Device (2013)

    Songfacts page? Yes

After Disturbed went on hiatus starting in late 2011, lead singer David Draiman kept busy with an industrial metal side project called Device. It was him and guitarist Geno Lenardo, who's best known for his time with the band Filter. Or rather, it was David Draiman, Geno Lenardo, and an impressive list of features. Lzzy Hale is a feature on one song, presumably because Halestorm and Disturbed toured together and the former even had Draiman do backing vocals on The Strange Case Of... System of a Down's Serj Tankian is also on the album, as are Tom Morello, Glenn Hughes, Avenged Sevenfold's M. Shadows, and Black Sabbath's Geezer Butler. Perhaps Device being a side project gave Draiman and Lenardo free reign to work with some of their favorite people and have fun doing it, which might have something to do with me liking this slightly more than everything I've heard from Godsmack so far for this thread.

Godsmack also has a female drummer, but as I stated before, there is a difference in my mind between a band with a female member and a band whose primary singer and songwriter is a woman.

Darius Rucker is far more tolerable as a musician and a person.

Volbeat having a nice little run on the charts around this time.

Wikipedia notes that American guitarist Rob Caggiano joined the band as of this album. So now they're an American/Danish band.

Well, this is weirdly hilarious timing. Pop Evil is a rock radio staple that has gone through numerous lineup changes since its formation in Michigan in 2001. In fact, the day before I posted this, bassist Matt DiRito announced he was leaving the band after fourteen years. The remaining original members, vocalist Leigh Kakaty and rhythm guitarist Dave Grahs, have stuck around through eleven top-10 hits and six #1 hits. The band's first chart-topper was Trenches, which was fortuitously enough Mainstream Rock's biggest song of 2013. I don't know why, but they made an alternate version of the song for the 2014 ACC Men's College Basketball Tournament with the verses performed by DMC from legendary rap group Run-DMC. It's not bad, but I'm not surprised to know that version currently has a little over 700,000 views on YouTube while the original has seventeen million views.
