This wasn't really my scene in 1976, so didn't buy the single, but equally smiled every time Tina appeared on TOTPs, didn't turn the radio off, or walk away - guess I was a closet fan!

Didnt like this single at all at the time, almost despised it for being trite.

I was wrong, it is a wonderful piece of pop. Used to great effect on the recent TV series River.

Not a buyer as a 12 year old lad, but still a great pop song that has endured with the passing years.

Wasn't Manuel and his Music Of The Mountains number 1 for a few hours?

From memory, there was some stuff up and the chart read at 1pm on the radio was incorrect.

To quote you from the 1970 thread, "I was too young, at the time, to realise the quality and diversity in the UK chart."

This certainly applies to me too, and so many genres that I didn't appreciate in the Seventies, I do now. It has been a lot of fun revisiting these charts and the great music, and I must tip my hat to @Bobby Morrow for coming up with the idea and starting these threads - thank you sir! :tiphat:

You beat me to 10cc and John Miles, both quality songs. Music, a top three hit which regularly drops into a 7/8 time signature.

Will add the excellent Gallagher & Lyle, I Want To Stay With You and my first exposure to the old Unit 4 + 2 number one classic from 1965, Concrete And Clay with a good cover by Randy Edelman at #22: Record Mirror with their usual typo!

With Rain still in the top twenty, the mighty Quo delivered the fantastic Blue For You album straight in at number one in the album charts. Together with Rain, an edit of the excellent Mystery Song, which was the follow up single, was included.

The full album version has a brilliant play out, and shows that Quo were far more than a three chord, or one trick pony.

Edit. I have to admit that B*Witched look better in double denim!

'Music' is truly epic, one of my favourite songs from 1976. Would have deserved to be a number one hit.

I seem to remember having shown the US label (on Columbia) for the A side o' this. But other than #1-1-1 which I do have, the others in my collection are:
    #2-2-9, #8-4-3, #13-18-19, #30-26-23, #35-/-/, #43-/-/, #44-27-25, #/-41-17 (via 1965 US Capitol single b/w "Act Naturally"), #/-/-36, and #/-/-50 (originally issued in 1971 in the U.S., the first post-Morrison Doors single).

From what I could see of the second and third weeks "I Love To Love" was at the top, the LP positionings of what I have would be:
    #10-7 and #45-39.

    The U.S. 45's, from what I could see, I have #1 and 2.

Honestly ace...you'd be better off just typing out what you like/bought.
Nobody...I would have thought...is gonna look up your Number trails etc.
I don't mean to offend...but just post the few...or all... that you like, but type the artist and song.

Appologies in advance in case of offence.....:hide:

That is a great video, which I have never seen before.

You can get to hear the John Miles classic in it's entirety, several times a week on whatever radio station we have on at work: totally agree, truly epic.

For the folk who dismiss 1976 out of hand, surely they are ignoring songs such as this?

1976 was also the year when The Beatles singles were re-promoted, Yesterday was at number 17.

The Singles Collection 1962–1970 is a series of reissued singles by the English rock band the Beatles. It was released in Britain on 5 March 1976 by EMI,following the expiration of the Beatles' contract with the company in January, and close to six years after the band's break-up. The collection comprises all 22 of the Beatles' UK singles, which were originally issued between October 1962 and March 1970 on either the Parlophone or Apple record labels, together with a new single pairing "Yesterday" with "I Should Have Known Better".

According to EMI, the series was a re-promotion rather than a reissue campaign, since all the Beatles' singles had remained in print and were widely available. The project resulted from the success of the 1973 double-album sets 1962–1966 and 1967–1970, which the former Beatles had endorsed, and which contained all of their British single A-sides and double A-side tracks. Each of the discs in the 1976 collection was packaged in a green and black sleeve, on one side of which was a photo of the group from a period roughly contemporaneous with the single. The records were available in a matching Singles Collection 1962–1970 box to customers who bought all 23 of the discs.

The re-packaging campaign was a commercial success, with 1 million singles sold in the first month. The response coincided with media speculation regarding rival bids from two US promoters for the Beatles to reunite for a satellite concert broadcast. Reflecting this resurgence of interest, BBC Radio 1 produced the program The Beatles Again, which highlighted the group's continued influence on pop music; in a feature article in Reveille, an EMI spokesman described the campaign as an "amazing" success, with teenagers as young as thirteen becoming fans of the Beatles. The re-packaged singles all charted on the UK Singles Chart, and "Yesterday" peaked at number 8. During one week in April 1976, the band had an unprecedented 23 entries in the UK top 100 positions. Although EMI and its North American counterpart, Capitol Records, were no longer obliged to consult the artists, John Lennon approved of the re-packaged singles. This tacit approval contrasted sharply with the former Beatles' reaction to the 1976 themed compilation album Rock 'n' Roll Music, which Capitol assembled without consulting EMI.

I bought several Beatle's singles with the green and black sleeves in 1976.

Missing being able to play this, I bought some digital John Miles a couple of years ago. His "Music" still sounds very good.

With all due respect, citing the chart numbers is a matter of simplicity, brevity and keeping the character count down. Otherwise you'd have a situation similar to a short piece Americans would most be familiar with:

To paraphrase this song, mentioning the titles over and over in this context can really wear one down.

"Yesterday" was first issued as a single in the U.S. b/w the Ringo-sung "Act Naturally" on Capitol 5498 in 1965. What is considered the first solo number - it was just Paul singing, backed by a string quartet - was one of the Fab Four's twenty Number Ones in the States. Pic sleeves, as cited in Bruce Spizer's books, are of varying color quality depending on which printer put them out. Those with straight cuts have a different color calibration than those with tab cuts. My pressing's either a Scranton or a contract pressing with the same fonts used on Scranton pressings, shown afterwards will be the PS:

As for "I Should Have Known Better," it was the B side of the U.S. issue of the "A Hard Day's Night" single (Capitol 5222, 1964).

This rings so true, I didn't really appreciate Soul, Disco, Folk, Country or Reggae as a youngster, but liked a good pop tune.

Roll forward 40 odd years and the hard drinking, long haired singer of our band asks me if I like those other heroes of double denim, B*Witched. In between splits with his girlfriend, the singer lodged with me and we used to wind down after gigs by listening to Kate Bush, Carpenters and Bee Gees (who he really opened my mind and ears to) and some Status Quo.

    But from this-

    To this? -

I thought he had totally lost it. The only B*Witched that I could recall was C'est La Vie and Blame It On The Weatherman.

Via the fridge and some more tinnies, I was first introduced to this.

I was blown away, and vowed to treat all music with an open mind - some is simply not for me but at least it has a fair listen and not the instant dismissal, which was the case in the '70's. More to the point, there always has been very good "Pop" music, and it isn't a crime to appreciate it.

I know that this post has gone off somewhat at a tangent, with the somewhat tenuous double denim link, BUT, who is truly open-minded to any music and dares press play on B*Witched?
