As to the 45's I'd have (this may have to be in parts) . . .
Have the first (white/red/black) variant as below (two different label designs):
    [IMG] [IMG]

    [IMG] [IMG]
In the U.S., the first of three Number Ones for this group. The mono o' this is the way to go:

In the U.S., this was a double-sided hit with its flip, the far more uptempo "Lookin' Out My Back Door."
Was their first #1 in the US.

Didn't Dave Dee have his own entry recently? Albeit one that didn't see U.S. release?

No U.S. release, but this was parodied by Benny Hill in this famous routine (go to 0:43 if you don't want to see what comes before):

Another thing about the Bread single: It would be their only U.S. #1.

Miracles: I always found this one sort of annoying, because I'm not crazy about the upbeat music in the first place but the lyrics tell a sad story that jars with it. However, I guess that's the idea, the music runs with the clown idea and the lyrics provide the contrast. It obviously worked for a lot of people, just not for me personally. I'm loath to call it a bad song, because it isn't

Jackson 5: I'm no fan of the J5 (as I've often said), but if I had to pick one of their songs that I liked just a little more than their others (or maybe I should say, disliked less), this would be it

D B M T: former big act minus Dave Dee, you know who I mean, sally forth with the kind of song that seems to only want to draw attention to itself, without really having anything to show

Andy: ditching the old-style MOR that often ventured into schlock, it sounds like he's been listening to some Marmalade or Love Affair or those other up-tempo late-'60s songs with brassy arrangements. Not bad

Bread: this is what results when a highly talented record producer of several unaccountably failed singles in the '60s decides to go all snoozy soft-rock in the '70s and hits the charts repeatedly. On its own individual merits, this particular song is passable enough

Who: sounding (live at Leeds) more like the Blue Cheer version that was the first one I heard, rather than Eddie Cochran. By now I prefer the latter original, but I have the former's LP. No denying that the Who do what they do pretty well

Jimmy: attractive cover (with more of a beat) of the Cat Stevens song, which if memory serves didn't become a hit until a year later. I like Cat's song, and I don't hear any reason to like Jimmy's any less

3DN: clever concept for a song, and quite well done, but I always found it annoying (although not as much as a certain other huge song by the band not too long after). Other than those two, I liked their material

Dorothy: medium-slow, nicely orchestrated (though with prominent and perhaps sometimes intrusive sax) MOR version of the song best known by Sinatra. Oddly enough, the thought occurred to me that she might have sounded alright fronting a punk band

Tom: a slow woe-is-me-I-can't-compete one, with big production and wah-wah-ing guitars. Middle of his pack at best

Hot Choc: new to me, this is pretty good, a bit like the Marmalade / Love Affair style in some ways, but they bring their own rhythmic elements, their own harmonies, and likeable string and brass melodies

Poppies: attractive, rather melancholy, medium-slow debut with nice billowing organ and subdued guitar licks in the chorus, from the Canadian act featuring Terry and Susan Jacks

Purple: it's mostly far-from-consequential rock riffing, of which the opening and predominant one is obviously similar to the main one in We Ain't Got Nothing Yet by the Blues Magoos. Lord (Jon?) knows they could do better

Chairmen: decent later-style Motown, the vocals sound a little strained

Family: definitely on the proggy side for a three-minute song, a bit too much squally guitar for my liking towards the end but otherwise okay

Des: Jimmy Cliff cover, fairly quick, basically alright but a little repetitive and ultimately insubstantial. The titular issue could be taken up with the Rolling Stones for a potentially interesting debate

Al: smooth, mid-paced MOR track that avoids any production excess, maybe even the epitome of the style

Aretha: another good song that I like only middlingly

Martha & V's: a pleasant song with a rather strident although not pounding beat, piano and sax and the usual fine vocals

Bobby: one-hit wonder that (perhaps influenced by the title) sounds very "island", particularly his vocal tone, although apparently it's New York all the way. I didn't know that he co-wrote Mony Mony by Tommy James and the Shondells

Sab: more straightahead rock chugging that doesn't do too much for me but I believe aficionados of the style think the song is the cat's pyjamas

Freda: if you heard this and didn't know who it was, you'd be forgiven for guessing the Supremes (although I have for whatever reason always associated it with Rescue Me by Fontella Bass). I've never been crazy about it but (listening again) it's not bad

Cliff: quite pleasant version of a song performed over here by a band called Glass Bottle (which has an interesting backstory)

CCR: another rocker in the style of Travelin' Band and Up Around the Bend, but significantly slowed down and with added organ and sax

Carpenters: another debut by an iconic act, a pleasant arrangement that certainly leans to MOR without the really big production of yore. Unfortunately, like Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin and (in particular) the Jackson 5, the Carpenters were talented artists I never cared much for, although here they obviously have made a pretty good song on its merits

Single of the Week: nothing I'm overly wild about, but Love is Life by Hot Chocolate hits a couple of the right buttons

Diana: I've probably heard this Gaye / Terrell cover a bazillion times in my life so I remember the hooks and stuff and it's hard to actively dislike, but I'd be lying if I said I was truly impressed by it

Trems: trying to mix their sharp '60s style with the nascent not-too-bright rock style, with results that are also mixed. The harmonies are pretty much still there, and perhaps the track is a little Beatlesque in some ways too

Horace: pleasant, upbeat reggae cover song with a percolating rhythm. Didn't someone else already release this song in the U. K., who also wasn't named Sonny Charles?

Engelwhosit: cover of a fine Brothers Gibb song (from Cucumber Castle) that, while typically Engelbert, isn't terribly far removed from the original

Jim: six years after his passing, and they're still coming. If the day came when he released a song in a totally different style, I'd get such a shock I'd probably jump in the ocean

Single of the Week: not much to choose from here, but I'll split it between Horace Faith's Black Pearl and Engelbert's Sweetheart, both of which are pleasant listening
