How many were irritated over the years by the sound of Al Stewart's voice? (That I have his "Time Passages" single is an indication I ain't among that crowd.)

Interesting that you mentioned Al Stewart. I used to play the Year Of The Cat album a lot and saw Al at the Cambridge Folk Festival, enjoying his set. One day without realising that others disliked his admittedly very stylised vocal delivery, I suddenly thought his voice to be a bit irritating! Still great music and hasn't stopped me from playing his albums....

As for Neil Tennant, the music has triumphed and I no longer turn off the radio when I hear his dulcet tones.

Another Poptastic number one from Madonna.

It might not have been what I was listening to in 1987, but it is a perfect chart fodder and deserving number one.

A couple of great songs taken from the Famous Blue Raincoat album, where the excellent vocal talent of Jennifer Warners takes on the songs of Leonard Cohen.

First We Take Manhattan being the opening track, the recognisable SRV on guitar and Zappa's Vinnie Colauita on drum duty.

This album became a Hi-Fi shop dem favourite, the track I used the most being Joan Of Arc, where Jennifer duets with Leonard and Vinnie pushes the envelope of some of his fills to the extreme. Outstanding and hauntingly beautiful.

While I much prefer The Pretenders' "If There Was a Man", A-ha's "Living Daylights" is still an amazing song thanks to the genius of John Barry.

I was always fascinated with this soundtrack. John Barry, the old Bond-theme warhorse, seems to have deftly entered the synthesized 80's with a series of absolutely beautiful motifs. Each one was then stylized in a few different ways to flush out the soundtrack. Both's Chrissie's and A-ha's pop treatment of these themes pays off in spades and yields impressive results.

They are like the tip of the iceberg. What you see is impressive but what's buried beneath (and also on the rest of the soundtrack) is what's truly astounding.

PSB's "It's A Sin": I love that Neil and Chris are getting some genuine love and respect on this thread. It's hard to get anything PSB-related going on the SHMF because of all the Americans (like me!). There just isn't enough of a knowledge base there. As @boyjohn noted, this is just the beginning of a long and amazingly solid career of fantastic music. "It's A Sin" showed that they could really stretch the rules a bit and meld beautiful artsy music with concise pop sensibilities. No wonder they named a greatest hits package "Pop Art".

Even though I am not Catholic, I do like the Catholic tinge in the song. I just MAKES you feel guilty along with Neil in the song for whatever it is he's singing about.

    Los Lobos - La Bamba

    2 Weeks at No 1

13th No 1 of 1987 and No 595 in total.

    [IMG] [IMG]
"La Bamba" (pronounced [la ˈβamba]) is a Mexican folk song, originally from the state of Veracruz, best known from a 1958 adaptation by Ritchie Valens, a top 40 hit in the U.S. charts and one of early rock and roll's best-known songs. Valens' version of "La Bamba" is included in Robert Christgau's "Basic Record Library" of 1950s and 1960s recordings—published in Christgau's Record Guide: Rock Albums of the Seventies (1981)[1]—and ranked number 345 on Rolling Stone magazine′s list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. It is the only song on the list sung in a language other than English.

"La Bamba" has been covered by numerous artists, most notably by Los Lobos, whose version was the title track of the 1987 film La Bamba and reached No. 1 in the U.S. and UK singles charts in the same year. The Los Lobos version remained No. 1 for three weeks in the summer of 1987. The music video for Los Lobos' version, directed by Sherman Halsey, won the 1988 MTV Video Music Award for Best Video from a Film.

The music video for Los Lobos' version of the song was directed by Sherman Halsey and featured Lou Diamond Phillips (who played Valens in the film named after the song). The music video was the winner of the 1988 MTV Video Music Award for Best Video from a Film.

In the video, the band performs at a carnival in front of a merry-go-round at night. In between, clips from the movie are shown. While they are performing, the carnival-goers dance near and on stage. Phillips joins the band for the song's final chorus. At the end of the music video, in the morning, the band is still playing on their acoustic guitars (with Phillips present) on the empty carnival grounds while janitors clean up around them.
