Great new entry by Cliff Richard, 'Carrie' is one of his best songs!

Yes, I was also more on the Rocker side (though I did have a go on a friend's Lambretta) but loved the 2 Tone music that made the charts a far more fun place and the girls looked great in their chequered mini skirts!

Too Much Too Young is an excellent tune and deserving number one, continuing the cracking run of the new decade.

Regardless, this set did not see any U.S. release, thus I will refrain from further comments about this record.

However, of the records on this chart during this stretch, I'd have #/-35.

A few U.S. labels are in order. Namely, the Cliff Richard offering:
And this Vapors' record which, in the U.S. in summer 1980, was one of the last issued on the United Artists label before parent Capitol-EMI retired that name in favor of a revived Liberty label (and with the same cat. # sequence):

Then after the label name switch:

And then, this, the biggest hit of Styx in the States:

Kenny Rogers - Coward Of The County

    2 Weeks At No 1

4th No 1 of 1980 and No 451 in total...

"Coward of the County" is a country song written by Roger Bowling and Billy Ed Wheeler, and recorded by American country music singer Kenny Rogers. The song was released in November 1979 as the second single from Rogers' multi-platinum album Kenny. It became a major crossover hit, topping the Billboard Country chart and reaching #3 on the Hot 100 chart; it also topped the Cash Box singles chart and was a Top 10 hit in numerous other countries worldwide topping the chart in Canada, the UK, and also in Ireland where it stayed at #1 for six consecutive weeks.[1]

Rogers sings in narration about his ward and nephew Tommy, a young man with a prominent reputation for never standing up for himself; his pacifism earned him the derisive nickname "Yellow" from others throughout the county, but Rogers hinted that he always felt there was something about Tommy that the rest of the county did not see.

Tommy's nonviolent attitude was greatly influenced by his father who had died in prison when Tommy was ten years old; during his final visit with him, Tommy's father pleads with him to not make the same mistakes he made, telling him that "turning the other cheek" is not a sign of weakness, and advising him, "Son, you don't have to fight to be a man".

Years later, Tommy is in a relationship with a woman named Becky who loves and accepts Tommy as he is without his having to prove he is a man (Becky also knew him as "Yellow"). One day, while Tommy was at work, the three Gatlin brothers visit Becky and gang rape her. When Tommy returns home and finds Becky crying and much worse for wear, he is faced with the dilemma of having to choose between defending Becky's honor or upholding his father's plea to "walk away from trouble when he can".

Realizing he cannot ignore his predicament, Tommy goes to the bar where the Gatlins hang out, but they only laugh at him when he walks in. After one of them meets him halfway across the floor Tommy turns around, and the Gatlins assume he is going to walk away yet again, but a deathly silence falls over the entire bar when they hear Tommy stop and lock the front door. Fueled by his long-bottled-up aggression, Tommy cuts loose and furiously fights the Gatlin boys leaving all three of them lying on the barroom floor by the time he left; the lyrics are ambiguous as to whether the Gatlins were dead or just unconscious.

Tommy then reflects on his late father's plea, addressing him respectfully that while he did his best to avoid trouble, he hopes he understands that "Sometimes you gotta fight when you're a man."

Controversy regarding "The Gatlin Boys" lyric
It has been claimed that mention of the "Gatlin boys ... there was three of them" in the song was a reference to The Gatlin Brothers. However, in The Billboard Book of Number One Country Singles, Rogers stated that he did not realize the connection, and that had he done so, he would have asked for the name to have been changed. Larry Gatlin also gave the song a positive review ("It's a good song").[2] Writer Billy Edd Wheeler denied that the lyric was a reference to the Gatlin Brothers.[3]

Larry Gatlin claimed in an interview on the Adam Carolla Show that Roger Bowling had a personal grudge against him although he didn't know why. He told Carolla that when Bowling won song of the year for "Lucille", he (Gatlin) walked over to congratulate Bowling for winning. Gatlin told Carolla: "He said '**** you Gatlin.' I said 'what?' He said '**** you.' I said 'Let me tell you something, hoss. If we weren't in the Grand Ole' Opry House dressed up in tuxedos, I would just open a boot shop in your ass.'" Gatlin said it was a year or two later that his family name showed up in "Coward of the County."[4]

It should be noted (as I may've said on another thread where another of Mr. Rogers' hits topped the UK charts) that the Billy Sherrill credited as engineer on this record was not one and the same as the CBS Nashville A&R producer who'd worked with the likes of such stars as Tammy Wynette, George Jones and Charlie Rich.

I'd have #12-12, #23-24 (in its original issue as the B side of "Ladies Night") and #72-39 - and from this batch, that's it.

Didn't get an alert for this, hopefully will now.

Not a song I liked back in 1980, but equally didn't dislike it. Enjoy it when it comes on the radio and realised that I don't have it on any comps.

    Blondie - Atomic

    2 Weeks At No 1

5th No 1 of 1980 and No 452 in total

"Atomic" is a hit song by the American new wave band Blondie, written by Debbie Harry and Jimmy Destri and produced by Mike Chapman. It was released as the third single from the band's platinum-selling 1979 album Eat to the Beat.

"Atomic" was composed by Jimmy Destri and Debbie Harry, who (in the book "1000 UK #1 Hits" by Jon Kutner and Spencer Leigh) stated "He was trying to do something like "Heart of Glass", and then somehow or another we gave it the spaghetti western treatment. Before that it was just lying there like a lox. The lyrics, well, a lot of the time I would write while the band were just playing the song and trying to figure it out. I would just be scatting along with them and I would just start going, 'Ooooooh, your hair is beautiful.'"[1]The word atomic in the song carries no fixed meaning and functions as a signifier of power and futurism.[2] The bridge to, and the break in the melody before "Atomic" is spoken, is heavily influenced by the bridge in the song "I'm on my way" by Dean Parish.

The song was produced as a mixture of new wave, rock and disco which had proven to be so successful in their No.1 hit from earlier in 1979, "Heart of Glass". It is written in E natural minor ("Call Me" is written in Eâ™ natural minor).

The 1980 single version of "Atomic" was a remix. The original 4:35 version as featured on the albums Eat to the Beat and 1981's The Best of Blondie opens with an intro inspired by the nursery rhyme "Three Blind Mice" and includes an instrumental break with a bass guitar solo. The 7" version mixed by Mike Chapman omits the "Three Blind Mice" intro and replaces the instrumental break with a repeat of the verse.

The song became the band's third number one in the UK Singles Chart, where it held the top spot for two weeks.[3] It reached the Top 40 in the US in Spring 1980.

The B-side was "Die Young, Stay Pretty", also from the album Eat to the Beat, a reggae-influenced track, a style the band would perform again in their global chart-topper "The Tide Is High". The UK 12" single contained a live cover version of Bowie's "Heroes" featuring Robert Fripp on guitar recorded at London's Hammersmith Odeon just a month before. The track was included on 1993's rarities compilation Blonde and Beyond.

"Atomic" was remixed and re-released in the UK in September 1994 where it peaked at #19 on the UK Top 40 singles chart.[4] The subsequent April 1995 US release reached #1 on the Billboard Dance/Club Play Charts.[5] The 1994 remix was included on the compilations The Platinum Collection, Beautiful - The Remix Album and Remixed Remade Remodeled - The Remix Project. The track was remixed again four years later for the UK compilation Atomic - The Very Best of Blondie and the '98 Xenomania mix was later included on the first Queer as Folk soundtrack album.

    Music video
The music video depicts the band performing on stage at what looks like a post-apocalyptic nightclub in which Debbie Harry is wearing a garbage bag as a punkish futuristic costume. The audience at the club are also dressed in suitably futuristic costumes, and footage of a horseman with the "Blondie: in the disco" new year's concert advertisement[6][7]. and an atomic explosion are also intercut. Model Gia Carangi (a strong supporter of the band) made a guest appearance in the music video and can be seen in various shots.

Brilliant song...and the video still stays fresh in my mind, what with Debbie doing a robotic dance in a bin liner!!!!

Fern Kinney - Together We Are Beautiful

    1 Week At No 1

6th No 1 of 1980 and No 453 in total.

"Together We Are Beautiful" is a popular single by Fern Kinney. Written by Ken Leray and produced by Carson Whitsett, Wolf Stephenson and Tommy Couch, "Together We Are Beautiful" was originally recorded Ken Leray in 1977, while a 1979 version by Steve Allan peaked at number 67 in the UK Singles Chart.[1] Kinney's version was originally a B-side to "Baby, Let Me Kiss You", but the song was flipped after DJs picked up on it. The song made number one on the UK Singles Chart for one week in March 1980.

The song was played in an episode of the BBC comedy show Gimme Gimme Gimme when the character Linda gets ready for bed before she is due to meet a secret admirer. In 2003, the song was sung by the main character, Ken, carrying out bar/landlord duties, in the opening episode of the first season of the BBC2 sitcom, Early Doors.[citation needed]

The song was also in a 2013 EDF Energy advert,[2] featuring the popular Keepon Zingy, introduced in 2012.
