Men At Work - DOWN UNDER

A brilliant, refreshing single. Inovative and simply different to most of the average stuff in the charts.

I think, for simplicity's sake, I shall be following in that direction. Even though, as you've said, all the differences. It should also make my year-end summary of NME's "extra" #1's from then until they stopped compiling their own charts in 1988, go down smoother. No doubt you saw from the prior exams how many posts that took up.

It also figures, as by this time the importance of B sides in terms of chart trajectory had long before plummeted.

The US release had no such pic sleeve - but it did have the same B side, "Crazy." Men At Work were one of a few acts who recorded in the UK for Epic and the US for Columbia:

Although leaning towards the more Rock / Metal releases....I still bought plenty of other albums around this time.
    Basically...if I liked 2 singles of a album...it was a risk worth taking...I bought it.
These days with YouTube, Spotify etc....you can sample a whole album before buying...or not, as the case may be.
    Or....just stream!!!!!!!!
    Who'd have thought it....

Even though the last 25 positions are not mentioned, with the change in chart compilation from the British Market Research Bureau (BMRB) to Gallup the "Official" charts had already expanded to 100 positions, so one entry that debuted the previous week at #80 (on 22 January) will be shown here:

Now among those that are listed (from henceforth, with entries reaching the Top 75 for the first time that were in lower positions before), here are "newies" from week to week (and in some cases, post to post within one week):

(I.M.H.O., Mel & Tim's 1969 hit "Backfield In Motion" covered the same ground in more than half the time.)

(Personally, I'll take Ringo Starr's '73 hit of the same title over this.)

To my ears, Annie Lennox' vocals on this sound similar to c.1970-74 Elton John.

Good job at keeping it traditional. Good fun, still can't touch the original.

    Down under
Instantly recognizable, has a one-of-a-kind mood. Even the flute sounds good for once. A hat tip!

Faithful to the original sixties vibe. Can't knock it, but prefer The Supremes.

Brilliant song that still sounds good to this day. Difficult to hear it without having a big smile and singing along.

Why are so many good Australian singers Scottish!?

Heard Colin Hay on the radio a few years ago, where he sang Overkill (very well). In the space of a couple of sentences, he went from an Australian accent, to Scottish and back seamlessly.

    Back to Down Under,

Liked the single, so took the chance on the LP. In this instance it was a very good decision as the album is excellent.

I possibly wasn't as risk averse, and often bought albums on the strength on one single. This has unearthed many very enjoyable LPs such as above, but also led to a few that had a single play.....

The Jam has 13 songs on the list for this week. That's quite impressive. How often does that happen?

David Watts and That's Entertainment are winners for me.

Tears For Fears is listed at CHANGES instead of CHANGE. Didn't the adults typing these up know what they kids were listening to then?

Change isn't as depressing as Mad World but it isn't as arresting either. However it sounds quite different from everyone else at the time and, again, I like the moody art school sound on their first album. Chris had some great songs early on. He'd sadly soon be drowned out by Roland's genius. Chris still remains a good songwriter. Some of his recent solo albums are fantastic.

The B-side The Conflict starts off pretty slow and rambling. It remains that way but also starts getting a little crazy around 2:45 with the atonal noises. I like that part.

Partly explained by the band breaking up and their first 15 singles being re-issued at once. Still, agreed it's impressive.

    Kajagoogoo - Too Shy

    2 Weeks At No 1

3rd No 1 of 1983 and No 515 in total.

    [IMG][IMG]

"Too Shy" is a song written and recorded by English band Kajagoogoo, released in 1983. The first single from their debut album White Feathers, the song was an immediate hit and reached number one on the UK Singles Chart for two weeks. It was also very successful in other European countries and Japan, spending five weeks at number one in Germany, also reaching number one in Belgium and Ireland, as well as reaching number two in France and Switzerland, and number four in Sweden, Austria and the Netherlands.

Assisted by heavy rotation on MTV, the song later became a success in the United States, peaking at number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100.[4] "Too Shy" is Kajagoogoo's only significant hit in the US, where the band is widely regarded as a one-hit wonder. In the UK, however, Kajagoogoo had further hits, including two more top 10 singles: "Ooh to Be Ah" and "Big Apple", both in 1983.

    Production
"Too Shy" was written by Kajagoogoo and produced by Duran Duran keyboardist Nick Rhodes and Colin Thurston, the latter of whom had produced Duran Duran's first two albums. In 2006, "Too Shy" was ranked number 27 on VH1's 100 Greatest Songs of the 80's[5] and number 9 on VH1's 100 Greatest One Hit Wonders of the 80s.[6]

    Music video
The video for the song cast model Carolyn Espley (later wife of Dennis Miller) as a waitress cleaning up a nightclub at the end of the night. As the band performs the song on the club stage, she has visions of dancers from different eras populating the dance floor.[citation needed]

    Chart performance
The song was an immediate hit, topping the UK Singles Chart for two weeks.[7] It was also very successful in other European countries, spending five weeks at number one in Germany, and reaching number two in Switzerland, and number four in Sweden, Austria and the Netherlands.[8]

The 12" maxi single's B-side, "Take Another View", a non-album track, often performed live, was included on the 2004 re-issue of White Feathers, which contained several bonus tracks, including the instrumental version of "Too Shy", originally featured on the B-sides of both the 7" and 12" singles.
