Ralph Bakshi is 80 years old -- I'd be surprised if he gave a crap at this point, except to see if they give him a reasonable token payment.

I met him once when I did the home video mastering on Fritz the Cat, and he did not seem like a happy man. I was surprised to learn he had nothing to do with The Nine Lives of Fritz the Cat.

What does Bakshi have to do with the Freak Brothers?

Yeah, I was about to say, wasn't it Gilbert Shelton who did the Freak Brothers? Whoever says they remember the '70s clearly wasn't really there. :)

The one story I remember has fat Freddy nervous about buying prophylactics at a drug store. He finally decides to brazen it out, telling the pharmacist that "I'll have a dozen of your finest rubbers, I have a hot date tonight!" When he picks up his date, her father who answers the door turns out to be the pharmacist.

  10. Surprised this project has come back to life. I would've figured its sell-by date was a good 30 years ago.

I remember how subversive those comics seemed. I found one the other day and it’s funny hippy art, but the jokes are all classic Borscht Belt humor and it’s about as subversive as The Flintstones with a couple mentions of weed.

    I want a Fat Freddie's Cat series.

Absolutely! Fat Freddy's Cat is absolutely timeless, and the best cartoon cat ever. Gilbert Shelton truly understood cats.

Shelton has been trying to do an animated version for decades. There was a trailer for a stop-motion clay animated version, but it never happened.

    I'm Fat Freddy's Cat and I ain't no kitty.

I'll make it rough on you if you're going to be s**tty.

I'll track your records up with my paws
And I'll pop your waterbed with my claws
I'll shed more fur every time you sweep
And I'll sit on your face when you're asleep.
I'll s**t in your shoe and I'll pee in your hat
And I'll spray the whole house with 'essence of cat.'

I'd like to see a project based on "Trashman" by the late Spain Rodriguez.

I can't imagine why they would do this, it's just so rooted in the past, but maybe they will approach it as being set back then? I wouldn't mind a segment with Wonder Warthog, one of them could fall asleep reading a WW comic, or it could be playing a s movie in a theater.

Gilbert Shelton could easily get the money for an animated film, if he'd license is characters for pot brands in areas with recreational marijuana.

Good solid comedy but not exactly Crumb underground.

It's been a while since I read any but I was a huge fan when I was younger and read every issue cover to cover many times. And as I recall, it could get pretty thoughtful and even sort of deep sometimes.

I just read a couple and they’re very fun and homespun and very old-school Jewish trickster humor. It’s nice pleasant stuff I was surprised for some reason I had this vision of it being this far out radical hippie stuff but like I say it’s about as far out as the Flintstones

I'm more of a Crumb fan as well, but I bought a complete collection of the Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers Omnibus a few years back.

Crumb was the better artist - he was basically peerless in the Underground world - but Shelton was the best storyteller.

Cuz a lotta cats wouldn't and a lotta cats couldn't
Hand a lickin' to a chicken or a razzin' to a rat
When they finished messin' round with FAT FREDDY'S CAT!
(bop diddley wah wah clang honk tweet!)

Seriously... this is great news. I've been a Freak Bros. fan since way before I was old enough to purchase their comics legally (haha).
I've actually used "Fat Freddy" and/or "FatFreddysCat" as a screen name on various online forums and web sites in the past, tho I've gotten away from using it in recent years. Too many people thought it meant that my real name was "Fred."
