I tried but never really got into the soap opera look...the video tape was too strange. It fit sort of for Dark Shadows...

He was Duke, the fat middle-aged perv who called her "Mrs. Fablo".

"It's you and I, Mrs. Fablo! Heh heh heh!"

I don't think I thought it was creepy in the 80s, but now... man, that's a pretty grim finale for a comedy sketch!

Probably a bit of a cheat since the entire movie is numerous sketches, many of which are tv and movie take-offs, but I feel remiss in not mentioning perhaps the best of all, "Fistful Of Yen" from Kentucky Fried Movie:

How about a fake commercial (obviously based on the old Slinky commercials)?

We watched Detective Pikachu with our kids, and it was also playing in the background in an apartment in one scene. It was my favorite part of that movie :)

The first one that comes to mind is "The Joker" with talk show host Murray Franklin.

I love it! It's as if he's saying to the whole thread, "Hey - I'm right here...!"

Brilliant idea for a thread, by the way.

I dunno if this counts, but it's got that "story-within-a-story" vibe to it.

"Tales Of The Black Freighter" is a comic book that characters in the comic series The Watchmen read. What elevates it to "show/movies" in a show/movie, is that originally Zack Snyder had the fictitious comic adapted into what eventually became a direct-to-video feature. Originally, he had wanted live action sequences inserted into the Watchmen feature, but for budgets' sake they cut it down to the animated format, and eventually still had to excise the segments from the finished film for time constraints.

So, even if the origin is a comic-book-within-a-comic book, it eventually became a show-developed-as-a-comic-book-developed-as-a-show-within-a-show...which ended up as an animated "show-without-a-show".

Lucy's TV commercials were always a highlight (Aunt Martha's Old Fashioned Salad Dressing, too), to say nothing of Ricky's starring role in the fictitious MGM film "Don Juan" that took the gang to Hollywood for a season and a half.
