Bigger isn't always better. Rich, Krupa, Ringo and Watts proved that!

No more ridiculous than Lady Gaga's outfits really.

But Gaga's outfits don't exist for musical purposes - they're for sheer spectacle. Maybe those drum sets work for the same reason, but I get the impression they're meant to show that the drummer is so AWESOME that he needs 549 drums to do his job...

    Keith Moon's 1975–1976 – Premier cream/white kit

Excerpt from International Musician, April 1976

What does your kit consist of?
KM: Well, it’s a Premier kit for a start. The snare is a Gretsch, but the rest is entirely Premier. There are four double-headed tom-toms — 12″, 13″, 14″ and 16″. Then in front of them are five single-headed tom-toms which are 12″, 13″, 14″, 15″ and 16″. A lot of people might write in and say they don’t make a 15″, and the fact is they don’t. But they did for me. That’s the top line. On the right, there are two double-headed tom-toms which I think are 18″ by 18″, and two 16″. Then, mounted on stands, there are two 14″open-ended drums and two timbales. On the left, there are two tympani and behind, a Paiste 30″ Chinese gong. Two bass drums and that’s about it. Cymbals ranging from left to right are 22″ ride, 20″ crash ride, 14″ splash in the centre and then a line of three — 18″, 20″ and 22″. At the back, at an angle above the timbales, I’ve got a Chinese cymbal. The high-hat has two 15″ cymbals. I keep that permanently closed.

I have a friend who has one of the Keith Moon Picture Of Lilly toms from the 1968 tour
He has had many offers including the RRHoF

I don't have a picture but they are victorian age nudes

I'm sure more than one set was used, but also many drum heads shredded

needless to say - he owns a guitar shop and would love a Townsend destructable piece of art

It's been claimed that Bonham patterned his set on Buddy's, who Bonham was a big admirer of.

That's not anywhere near as famous as his black oyster 4 pc. Ludwig kit. Especially with that unique (for him) cymbal setup.

Having all those drums doesn't automatically mean you know how to use them all.;)

I think that notion played out about 20 years ago.

  19. Thanks I've always loved that set. Ringo's "Hollywood" Ludwig kit.
For some reason I just like seeing Ringo with two tom-toms. He played some later kits with two tom-toms (the light up Ludwig kit from his "Ognir Ratts" Prince & The Pauper TV Special comes to mind- and I think some All-Starr Band tours too).
And this set is certainly iconic in it's own right, as it was seen all through "Let It Be", including the rooftop gig, and...it was used on both "Let It Be", & "Abbey Road", and IIRC correctly made it's first appearance during "The Beatles (The White Album)". I'd say that that's pretty important!!

But the general public doesn't relate that. This is the one that brings the muffins home.

I'm surprised the infamous Keith Moon kit with the goldfish hasn't been mentioned yet. Wasn't there a big uproar from the animal rights activists over that one?

Willie's kit always reminded me of George Pal's "Time Machine" at the time. In fact, Utopia eventually did a "Time Machine" homage with the CRY FOR ME video.
