I understand it has a lot to do with associated equipment but how would an Oppo 103 roughly rank 1-10 for 2 channel SACD and Redbook playback? I have a 103 and wonder if I should invest in something better relative to how much I'd have to spend to get a worthy upgrade? My SACD and Redbook needs are minimal but I have been snagging more used CDs lately. Thanks.
I was lucky to snag a 205, as the helicopters were airlifting the folks off the Oppo roof. I am very happy with it, but have one snag. Although multichannel comes through all speakers with SACD and DVD-A, try as I might, Blu-ray only does in stereo, even if I select 5.1. I have pored over the manual, with no success, and fear that I messed up deep in the player's settings. Does anybody have a fix? Really want to hear Revolution 9 in surround! Thanks in advance.
Yes, mine plays back DSD fine but I am talking about the hdmi input accepting DSD, which it doesn't. It does over network and attached drives however.
Bill, Are you using HDMI? If so do you have the HDMI resolution set to 720p or higher? In the 205 manual on page 59-60 it explains that if the HDMI resolution is not 720p or higher to get hi-res multichannel audio. If you use HDMI to connect audio to an HDMI A/V receiver or audio processor, it is important that you choose 720p or higher HDMI output resolution when playing high resolution audio content (DVD-Audio, SACD, Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio). According to the HDMI specification, the bandwidth available for audio is proportional to the total bandwidth used by video. At 480p/576p resolution, the HDMI specification can only support 2 channels of audio with high sample rate (up to 192kHz), or 8 channels of audio with standard sample rate (up to 48kHz). If you play high resolution audio content at the 480p/576p resolution, you may get reduced audio resolution, incomplete audio channels, or even no audio/video output at all. Bill, On page 63 of the 205 manual it shows how specific settings should be set when using the 5/7.1 analog output. You've probably checked these settings already. Do you get 5.1 audio with DVDs using DD or DTS? I no longer have 5.1 analog connected to my 205. If I have time tomorrow I'll reconnect the 5.1 cables to see if I have the same issues. Could it possibly a setting with your AVR/prepro not accepting Blu-ray multichannel audio? If no luck you could email Oppo to see if they would be able to help you. That's true. But 205 manual has so much complex information it's hard to decipher at times. The beauty of Oppo manuals is that they cover just about every possible scenario in regard to setting and connection possibilities. I've been into audio and A/V gear for over 45 years and Oppo manuals are among the best if not the best I've come across.
If I convert my dsf files to 352/64 according to jriver that is a lossless conversion from DSD. Do I still have to use a low pass filter on those or will the 205 apply it during playback?
Totally agree. You cannot get the most out of Oppo players without reading certain sections of the manual like 3 times. At least that's what I've had to do. If you don't read the manual you are consistently going to have "mysterious" issues. It does get a bit easier after having setup 5 Oppo players Subscribing to the Oppo xxx owners threads at AVS helps a lot too.
Hey guys, I'm using JRIVER software to stream to my 205 via USB. Yesterday, I noticed DSF files are being converted to PCM by JRIVER before it gets to my DAC. I went to the options and changed output mode to DSD. It worked fine and I could then see the files input to the DAC were DSD files.However, when using that setting, hi-res FLAC files and CDA ripped to FLAC are all messed up. Do I have to change the output encoding option every time I listen to a DSF file to let the OPPO DAC do the DSD to PCM conversion? I hope not, I use GIZMO to control JRIVER and only use my TV as a monitor when ripping or downloading. I've got to be missing something here. Thanks in advance for any advice.
