"....An exit to eternal summer slacking."

I just wanted to post that lyric because it's still very cool 20 years later.

I think All the Pain Money Can Buy was one of the first albums I ever bought (around age 10-11)

Each Fastball album tends to deliver at least one absolutely killer power pop song. The new one is "Best Friend." I never think much about Fastball, but when those handful of killer tracks come up on my shuffle, I always smile.

I only ever heard "the way", but it's a great song and the story behind it is just as good.

The now ex-wife was a big fan of Fastball. We listened to their albums often and saw them perform many times. In addition to being part of the audience for the recording of their live album, we were also present at Tony's first solo show. I really enjoyed the direction Tony was taking with his solo project and hoped he'd get a major record deal, but Fastball seemed to keep releasing new material which seemed to take precedence each time.

Definitely. I enjoyed their period about 10 years ago when they had Harmoni Kelley playing bass and Tony was handling mostly guitar and some keyboard. They still seem to use this band setup which is much fuller, although I'm not certain who is on currently on bass.

This was great! My wife , myself, and a friend of mine saw that lineup in Eastern Long Island at a tiny place called the Stephen Talkhouse. It was Thanksgiving Eve and I thought it would be packed. Turned out to be 6 other fans of the band and 4 locals sitting at the bar who could care less. I felt bad that they had trekked all the way out there (nearly 2 hours from NYC) for 6 people! Kudos to them though as they put on a great show and talked with us at length afterwards. Autographed a few cd's too. Very nice guys. They have never travelled past NYC again though!

How neat! You can't beat the intimate setting of a small club. I suspect the most lucrative shows for Fastball are the outdoor festivals, because the performers have a captive audience from the large crowds in addition to the existing fans who attend. We saw them at some package shows with a number of other 90s bands such as Cracker and Gin Blossoms and the audiences were very receptive.

An old favorite that I've recently gotten back into. No fewer than 8 songs off of their latest that I like. This band consistently delivers.

    We're on Our Way
    Best Friend
I Will Never Let You Down
    Love Comes in Waves
    Just Another Dream
    Secret Agent Love
    Hung Up
    Frenchy and the Punk

Forget All the Pain, Harsh Light and Make Your Mama Proud were knockouts.

I picked up the 20th anniversary CD of All the Pain Money Can Buy based on your DR findings and boy am I glad I did. I haven't done a side by side with the original CD but really don't think I need to. This version sounds terrific, wide open and far more engaging. I suppose a concern might be that altering the DR, increasing it in this case, might diminish the actual listening experience if one has become used to the original, more compressed version. But I find no concerns here. The songs simply sound like they should have all along.

Omnivore Recordings has done a great musical service, and I commend their effort. Indeed, to me, this has to be one of the top reissues of the year and proves that poorly mastered music from the 90s can be greatly improved. How about doing the same for Sugar Ray or Smash Mouth, among others.

As a side note, I have purchased only one other 90s CD--by the Charlatans UK--that was given more dynamic range in its reissue, and this was better for it as well. I wish this practice would see wider implementation. There is a lot of good music awaiting more sympathetic treatment.

I thought I'd only known The Way...Wrong! Knew lots of their songs!!! You may find you do, too. -
Someone here also mentioned Gin Blossoms. Funnily enough, a few years earlier had gotten a Gin Blossoms compilation & was like "hunh?" Songs I thought were Gin Blossoms are Fastball!!!
