Daniels' Hollywood film career started as a child actress in the silents and effectively ended in the mid '30s. (She moved to England after a series of stalking incidents.) (To me) Her looks changed considerably over her lifetime. (Her nose in particular.) Here's a selection of images searched on Google under 'images'. bebedaniels - Google Search I thought the above pair of photographs were nice glamour shots that stylistically were well matched. If you're looking for a resemblance between the two actresses, here's another couple of photographs in which it's a little closer. Del Rio on the left; Daniels on the right.
Just simply found this photo of Ida so I have to put it up. I need to read a biography of her - after I've seen all of her films. She was in some classics though surely would have been in more if not signed to Warner Brothers at the same time as Bette Davis (my second favorite actress), as Bette was the much bigger star and would get the best roles offered, usually. Ida Lupino, post WB, below. I really love this photo.
I love Evelyn Keyes. Stunning at times. Besides Gone With The Wind (where I didn't really take notice, same with Oklahoma!, I'd have to see them again), there's Here Comes Mr. Jordan, The Mating Of Millie, The Prowler, Mr. Soft Touch, Johnny O'Clock, God she was in a lot of things. And I love Jane Greer in Out Of The Past (best movie entrance ever by a woman?) and The Big Steal, also with Mitchum. She was so beautiful.
*woops, I was thinking of Gloria Grahame in Oklahoma. My error (I didn't know of either Evelyn Keyes or Gloria Graham at the time of seeing that).
Perennial favorites of mine - they weren’t considered leading ladies by any stretch - these women and others were the talented character actresses who made countless classic films shine through their memorable supporting roles. Marjorie Main Thelma Ritter Jane Darwell Margaret Dumont
Glad someone said Myrna Loy. She was lovely. And funny. At least in the Thin Man movies. Nick- How did you get rid of the reporters? Nora- Told em we were out of Scotch.
It’s really interesting going through these pics to see how make-up techniques and the look of eyebrows and lips had changed over time. Or maybe that’s just interesting to me.
You should her on film; check out Out Of The Past. It was remade (I forget the title) and the actress those years later could not do her entrance, what she did with it. She appeared in this later film (from the '80s, I believe) as some other character.
Excellent picks! I just saw both Thelma Ritter and Jane Darwell in some films recently (Darwell in My Darling Clementine) Ritter is one of a couple of favorite "older" women who always steal scenes, for me (I can't think of the other actress's name) Thelma is so great in: Rear Window, All About Eve, and Pickup On South Street. I know I've seen her in others - The Misfits, for one. Superb actress. The last movie I saw Marjorie Main in was Meet Me In St. Louis I believe, and Margaret Dumont in Never Give A Sucker An Even Break.
