ALL great choices. Some unique "best" choices on here. I adore Something Else by the Kinks, but have never heard anyone say it's their best.
My favorite Kinks LP is Face to Face, and I see most people vying for Village Green as the best or "gateway" Kinks album. But that period is so full of greatness it is difficult to say what is the pinnacle. You have good taste, sir.

    Favourite: Post (1995)
    Most successful: Debut (1993)

Commercially, Debut has the higher global sales (5.75m v 4.6m according to the stats I'm looking at). For me, Post is her pinnacle though. It's a melange of musical styles, from the locrian opener 'Army of Me', to the industrial 'Enjoy', trip-hop elements, the gossamer-like Hyberballad, and then her big-band big hit 'It's Oh So Quiet'. It's rather good, and she is nuts.

    Thank you...

I read some of your comments & that was what prompted me to post a few more preferences, it is my desire when I post with analysis that someone will discover new music to enjoy or revisit a known record with a fresh insight & new ears, again thanks for your kind words :tiphat:

I'm usually not big on "ranking" stuff, but I like the question as posed, because while I reserve the right to change my mind and substitute a different album for the album I name in a category, that album would most likely never be the album in the opposite category.

Of the catalogs I'm most familiar with:

    Bob Dylan: Favorite--"Desire"; Best--"Highway 61 Revisited"
    The Who: Favorite--"Quadrophenia"; Best--"Who's Next"
Alice Cooper: Favorite--"Love It To Death"; Best--"Billion Dollar Babies"
    Beatles: Favorite--"Help!"; Best--"Revolver"
Rolling Stones: Favorite--Tough to narrow down either category. Albums like "Out Of Our Heads" (US version), "Between The Buttons" (US Version) and "Their Satanic Majesties Request" are like candy to me (i.e. "favorites"), but their best would probably be "Sticky Fingers" or "Beggar's banquet"
    Led Zeppelin: Favorite--"Led Zeppelin"; Best--Untitled 4th Album
    Springsteen: Favorite--"Nebraska"; Best--"Born To Run"
    Smashing Pumpkins: Favorite--"Adore"; Best--"Siamese Dream"
Elvis--Favorite--"That's The Way It Is"; Best--"Elvis Presley"

The only artist I can think of (with more than three or four albums) where I would put the same album in both categories would be the Monkees, "Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones Ltd."

Thank you too samthesham...This is the spirit of this thread. I'm always thankful for someone turning me on to a new artist via a recommendation - and sometimes, it's an album I'll love for the rest of my life! Your insights and descriptions are informative as well.

Here's one for you all, with commentary:
    The James Gang
Favorite album: Yer Album (their debut, full of cool production touches, psychedelia, hard rock, acoustic guitars, and a Yardbirds cover and a Buffalo Springfield cover - what's not to love or be intrigued with that? A VERY impressive debut with lots of depth, and the only album with their original bass player Tom Kriss).

Best album: Rides Again (better recording quality but just as eclectic, features even more acoustic songs juxtaposed with the heavy stylings; contains the classic "Funk #49" plus the epic suite of "The Bomber". Essential early '70's hard rock LP - and one of Joe's most impressive set of songs in his illustrious career).

I've played these albums for many friends - and created James Gang fans for life in the process. Then again, I have many music-loving friends to thank for exposing me to music that I wasn't aware of that now is part of my DNA.

    Thanks to all for participating.

Funny, it's easier for me to have this kind of feeling towards band members. Bee Gees. Best: Barry. Favorite: Maurice. Kiss. Best: Paul Stanley. Favorite: Ace Frehley. In the case of albums, there is only one example I could mention:

    Beatles

    Favorite: "Help!"
    Best: "Revolver"

Sorry, this is the only example I can remember where the best is not my favorite.

    WOW!
Good choices. Remember, it's not really ranking stuff (as in top 5 or whatever), it's just A) what moves you, today and B) what you'd get or recommend for someone who wants to check out that artist.
It's really hard to narrow down the Stones. Or the Beatles! I have to say all your best choices are ones that I'd happily purchase for friends as essential...

This is a no-brainer, Michael. Good call - though my personal favorite is Benefit. But Aqualung is undisputed as a classic.

    Another Something Else favorite!

I would have to agree with you on all the others; other than the Kinks your favorites are mine too.

You would be great at hosting a listening party!

to my ears Peter Gabriel’s 4th album has a unique sound and style and it is the best example of his uncompromising approach to much. It’s been my favourite album since the year it was released and I don’t expect that to change.

So on the other hand is a much softer ride stuffed as it is with hits and a much warmer production. Still a great listen but not the journey of discovery that PG4 is.
