I love Hugo Pratt, especially the Corto Maltese series!

Seeing the Metal Men mentioned brought to mind their long-time artist, who had an even longer run on Wonder Woman; Ross Andru. Although I enjoyed his work on those books, I always felt he was a 2nd tier artist (like Don Heck, Dick Ayers, and, ahem, Sal Buscema). That opinion forever changed after seeing his work on the historic 1st meeting of Superman and Spider-Man. That, and Neal Adams work on Superman and Muhammed Ali were the equivalent of a modern day blockbuster movie!

Of course Metal Men! That series was brilliant. I still have those comics (and a reprint of the Manhunter series). You said it. His work on Metal Men (along with the colorist) was true to the original but moved it forward. At the time his use of panels and the positioning of figures in the space was brilliant. So stylised yet realistic.

Neal Adams - Almost everything he did with DC, but a special shout out to his work with DC's supernatural characters (Deadman, the Spectre, etc.).

Jim Aparo - I loved his work on Batman, and especially his collaboration with Michael Fleisher on the Spectre.

Stephen Bissette and John Totleben's Spectre in "Swamp Thing Annual #2".

Bernie Krigstein - His moody, atmospheric work at EC.

Jack Davis - Horror and comedy stories for EC

Johnny Craig - EC's horror and crime stories

Graham Ingels - Horror stories at EC

Bill Elder - Comedy art for EC

Dan DeCarlo - His artwork for Archie Comics pretty much defined that company's house style for decades.

A few artists who could draw Batman in a style I liked: Marshall Rogers, Irv Novick, Norm Breyfogle.

There are others as well, but these were the ones at the top of my head.

I bought my mom a copy of "Marvels" for Christmas because we both really like Alex Ross. She doesn't really read a lot of comics but she loves his art.

I like Sal Buschema's style, but I can understand people who don't find his work pleasing.

On the subject of Jack Kirby (and Ditko too), I wish filmmakers would give a little nod to him every once in a while. Stan Lee has cameos in just about every Marvel movie, but nobody knows who Jack Kirby was. Why can't they have "Kirby Ave." on a street sign, or have a picture of Jack hanging in some character's office or something.

This is a great book featuring the work of Barry Smith, Berni Wrightson, Jeffrey Jones (as he was at the time) and Mike Kaulta:

I strongly agree about him moving the looks of the characters forward. In Metal Men #45, there a scene where Tin is attacked and destroyed by The Plutonium Man. In the past, it would have show some damage but Simonson shows Tin being torn apart (basically shredded) and pain on his face as he is being destroyed.

Some more of my favorite artists:
    • Rumiko Takahashi (Ranma 1/2, The Mermaid Saga)
    • Stuart Immonen (Legion Of Super-Heroes, Superman Titles, The Final Night) - When he stepped in as the artist on Legion Of Super-Heroes it was a major change from the previous art team, yet his subtle artwork worked very well with the team.
    • Ivan Reis
    • Jim Lee
    • Ethan Van Sciver
    • Masakazu Katsura (Video Girl Ai)
    • Craig Hamilton (Aquaman)
    • Dave Gibbons (Watchmen, classic Doctor Who comics, Green Lantern)
    • Alan Davis (The Outsiders)
    • Alex Ross (Kingdom Come)
    • Adam Warren (Titans: Rock, Paper, Scissors, Livewires)

I agree. As an artist John Byrne is consistently great, whether working for Marvel (X-Men, Fantastic Four), DC (Superman) or Charlton (Rog 2000).
