I love the original version of Slip Inside This House by the 13th Floor Elevators, but I like this cover by Madrugada just as much.

Nikki Sudden and The Jacobites - Captain Kennedy

Neil Young's original was included on his 1980 album "Hawks & Doves".
Nikki Sudden's wonderful cover was recorded for the "Jangle Town" 12" EP, released on Creation Records in 1986.

"He was known in the islands as hundred foot iron
That steel hull freighter was passing its time
And time flew by faster with life on the sea
And the days they grew shorter for Captain Kennedy"

 

Eight Miles High, Byrds covered by Husker Du. They break the song down into a chunk of beautiful, powerful, melodic noise. It gives the piece a new urgent meaning that was hard to find in the underbelly of the original, if it existed at all.
