Far too many to mention. The sooner people get over subtitles the better.

The 36th chamber of shaolin is pretty awesome.

My wife grew up in the USSR and has a remarkably comprehensive knowledge of European cinema, mainly French and Italian and has introduced me to some excellent heart warming comedies: Italian marriage, Italian divorce, Fantomas etc, but I have to say one of the best she ever showed me was a North Korean movie from 1986 which she dug up on youtube called Hong Kil Dong. Its epic!

Just watched the Swedish film Let the Right One In from 2008 and Im blown away. Probably the most original and unique take on the vampire story especially from the vampire herself Lina Leandersson who plays Eli.

This is a great list, I would echo Bicycle Thief and Amelie are very easy foreign films to get into for beginners, but 10/10 films from almost all reviewers as well

My apologies as I'm just seeing your reply now. Yes, Irreversible has (2) incredibly violent scenes, which are a bit hard to watch. One is a rape scene. The other; a vengeful murder, but as it occurs in the plot it's a big swing and a miss. The first 15-20 minutes of the film is quite disorienting, almost like the director was under the influence. It ends beautifully.

Thanks, still haven't watched the film. I think I have to be in the right frame of mind to watch something that intense.

Funnily enough been watching some great South Korean films of late:

    Oldboy
    Lady Vengeance
    The Handmaiden
    The Host
    Snowpiercer
    Train to Busan

Yes, South Korea has a vital film industry. You've listed some favorites. I just finished Age of Shadows, an epic about the Korean resistance with distinctive action scenes.

Great film. I lent it to someone and told them not to read the back of the case but just take the film as it comes, as I didn't want them going into it thinking it was another 'vampire' flick. The remake is ok but not on the same level.
Another film like that is del Toro's debut Cronos.

I would actually recommend Del Toro's Pan's Labyrinth to those that loved Let the Right One In. Its also got a great performance by a child actor and an unsettling, dark tone with supernatural elements although a completely different story.

Many great films mentioned here. Surprised though that Cocteau's Orpheus (Orphee) wasn't posted. A modernized and clever telling of the Orpheus legend in post war France. Great B&W images.

Also - Autumn Afternoon and Floating Weeds (Ozu). Ozu mostly used one camera location for long takes.

Celine and Julie Go Boating. A take off on Alice in Wonderland.

Has anyone seen this Japanese film from 2008? It has such a unique story that is beautifully executed. Highly recommended.

Yes, we saw the DVD some years back. It is a beautiful film about a sensitive subject (especially in Asian cultures) and it lingers in the memory.

Showed that one to a guest about six months back. Excellent film.

Just bought the Criterion edition of Tess, have not watched it yet.

Here is a foreign film from Spain.

Not one of the great foreign films historically speaking, but a funny and enjoyable film to watch nonetheless.

La Ardilla Roja, A.K.A. The Red Squirrel
