What's your favorite song that opens a live album? I decided to start this thread after listening to the Band's "Rock of Ages", with a really rocking cover of "Don't Do It":

But my favorite one has to be the Grateful Dead's "Bertha" which opens the live 1971 album, as brilliant opening concert number as there ever was,

3 off the top of my brain...

1.Miles Davis / Prelude...the opening piece on Miles Davis 1975 record Agharta & a high point during MD fusion era & with Pete Cosey on guitar the closest we will ever get to a Miles & Hendrix collaboration

2.Jimi Hendrix Experience / Killing Floor from Monterrey but nothing could prepare us for sexual hard rock blast that Jimi would close with, the unbelievable Wild Thing

3.Elvin Bishop / Raisin' Hell... this stomping funky piece of mid-70s RocknRoll was the perfect opener to the shamelessly overlooked 1977 2LP barn burner record Live-Raisin Hell...

One of rocks finest live records

The sheer power of the intro song impacts me the most on live hard-rock recordings. My top five (in alphabetical order) are:
    • Beck, Bogert & Appice - "Superstition" (on Live in Japan '73)
    • Deep Purple - "Highway Star" (live albums from 1972) or "Burn" (live in 1974/75)
    • Grand Funk Railroad - "Are You Ready" (the best one is on their Live Album '70)
    • Humble Pie - "Four Day Creep" (like on their Fillmore '71 shows)
    • Led Zeppelin - "We're Gonna Grove" (e.g. Royal Albert Hall '70) or "Rock & Roll" (especially the one on The Song Remains the Same '73)

"I Guess You Made It" by Poco, from Deliverin'.

If I'm not mistaken, this was the first time this song was heard, as a studio version had not yet been released. The vocals at the first break were breathtaking!

"Train Kept A-Rollin'" from "Yardbirds '68"... for better and worse, there's no trace of its jump blues genesis or rockabilly rewrite... it's pure hard rock...
