If you love that as much as I do (my #6 all-time), you might like "A Face in the Crowd" with Andy Griffith.

I'll never forget the time I saw 'Rocky'. It's the only time I've been in a movie theatre and the entire audience (a full house, btw) not only en masse spontaneously applauded, the entire audience gave a standing, cheering ovation. People really loved that movie. 'Star Wars' was released the next year and people fanatically loved that movie, but even taking it into consideration, I've never seen the spontaneous outburst of love in a movie theatre that was the response to 'Rocky'.

Thanks - I always love reading first-hand stories like this.. Pretty good for a low-budget movie! John Avildsen is a very underrated director. There's a good documentary on him called "King of the Underdog"

"Rocky" was the first adult/serious film I saw (in a theater) as a kid (13) and it definitely changed the way I saw movies. I've always been impressed that Stallone not only wrote the script but had the good sense to insist that he would play the lead.

I think it was at that point in college, I had given up on pop culture in general, and was only studying film in relation to what could now be accomplished, moreso than what could be glopped-out there to satisfy brain-dead date-night audiences. I was focusing on music only at that point, pop music the least of my interests (aside, of course, that of what could make a booty bounce in a crowded room, that is ;) ).

Sure, I was an elitist of my own choosing, but, isn't that what college is for? To pick out all the cool kids, and immediately extract what it is they all have in common to identify as, "irrelevant"?

Did love Network, though. I was indeed mad as hell, and I wasn't going to take Morton Downey Jr. as the alternative, that's for sure...!

1976, what a great year for movies! I was 10 that summer and my imagination was in full overdrive. Rocky and The Omen for sure; but I have two sentimental favorites as I saw both of these in the theater that summer: Midway and Murder By Death.
The advertising for Midway heavily touted this new thing called "Sensurround" Sound and I still remember the anticipation on entering the theater that the seats would shake! The scene lives in my mind, a full theater of what looked like "old" people to me but really were fifty-somethings, many of the men wearing coats and ties (you saw the same thing at the airport in those days); this was "the greatest generation" although I didn't understand that at the time of course. Many veterans of WWII I'm sure, all gone now.
