  4. This isn't a favourite film. I currently have a rented DVD of a 1978 film called "Just A Jiggolo" which is a German film starring David Bowie. I'd never heard of it until a month ago, which is when I added it to my rental queue.

I don't know which is worse, the quality of the film print they used or the actual movie itself. The acting was OK but the movie made no sense to me. I'm going to watch it again before I send it back. I was kind of distracted because it looked like the film was dubbed into English. The majority of the cast is German and it was filmed in Germany (mostly) so it makes sense. Though David Bowie has dubbed David Bowie. I'm going to try harder to ignore it and see if I can follow it a bit bitter.

It's not a great movie, by any stretch. And it seems like a cast wasted on sub-B-grade material. But it's not exactly awful. Just not that good. In fact, admittedly, I can't really tell you what it's about other than a soldier in WWII Germany has had enough and falls in love with a woman who, I think, he's supposed to be her boss but she is his superior or something. I know I missed something along the way and seeing it should make it make a bit more sense.

Sorry for the sort-of off topic, we now return you to your regularly scheduled programme!

This thread is making me think I don't truly love many 1978 movies!

I do adore "I Wanna Hold Your Hand".

And I like others, of course.

But I think "Hand" is the only 1978 flick I'd call a real favorite!

Superman: The Movie: I still think this is the superhero movie all others are measured against. Plus, I was in the 5th grade in 1978 and this hit me right in my post-Star Wars, science fiction-loving sweet spot.

Later, when I got around to other movies (or was old enough to see them on our newly expanded pay TV channels) the ones that stood out from '78 were:
Animal House: I couldn't wait to get to college after seeing this! Plus, I was already watching Saturday Night Live and a big John Belushi fan.
Invasion of the Body Snatchers: Of the many remakes, this is the one I like most. It's better than the source material - both the novel and the original film - with a great cast (Look! It's Donald Sutherland again!) and a shocking and heartbreaking ending that feels right for the film and the times.
The Deer Hunter: I didn't see this until in came to cable TV, but wow...it floored me. Still does, too. Coppola would capture the spectacle and madness of Vietnam a year later, but Michael Cimino tapped into the haunting, overwhelming sense of loss that I (in retrospect) always associated with the war.

Superman. The special effects are dated now (though they were state of the art when compared to the 50s TV show), but it’s one of the best superhero origin stories to make it to the big screen. And it’s pretty much flawlessly cast (with maybe the exception of teenaged Clark). The story has plenty of time to breathe in between the set pieces, too. I love the wistful scenes in Smallville after Jonathan Kent has passed away.

I rarely hear this Stallone movie mentioned or talked about much but I think it's one of his better ones.

It's also the only movie that is similar to Jimmy Hoffa's story, and the only decent one. If only Jack Nicholson was in THIS movie.. You would have thought this would be very popular after "Rocky", and Norman Jewison had been around, good history of making decent movies.

I did! The effects don't hold up very well 40+ years later, but in 1978, those flying effects looked amazing!
