I prefer early pictures of all rock artists, before they get into the jet set designer poser clothing.
When it didn't really matter how they dressed because the emphasis was entirely on the music and the ability to perform it in front of crowds.
Zeplin is one of the worst offenders in that area.
Rock bands wearing the obligatory rock star uniform detracts from the image and takes the emphasis away from the music itself.

I take it you would be no fan of Elton John's stage clothing back in the 70's then? It's all an illusion anyways. From Elvis to The Ramones they all had their uniforms. I for one think these pictures rock.

Grateful Dead in all their finery:winkgrin:

Still I disagree. Rock star clothes and glamour befit many artists.
In fact it's a bit sadly missing.

Elvis early on was leather jackets, blue jeans, and T shirts. Even when he went Vegas it wasn't that outlandish. And he certainly wasn't dressing up in the poser rock star costumes that became "hair band".
Many rock bands never bought into that nonsense, Humble Pie was about the music, Foghat , Aerosmith had their own style most of the time that was not over the top.
Elton John, by 1973, had become a self parody. The best thing about him was Paul Buckmaster, Gus Dudgeon, and Bernie Taupin. So , no, by 1973 any interest in music that had his name on the cover I had was gone.
And the Ramones don't even count, that was a parody band. Spinal tap minus.

With a purple wooden cane and a 50 cent cast...Mister Page hobbles around on ageless crutches.

Damn, that hurts just looking at it.

Pretty sure that was the same picture used in Beware of Mr. Baker in reference to Bonham "couldn't swing a sack of s***"

"Rock star clothes" and glamor are the very anti of what rock music was about.
That is for pop groups like kiss and the Monkees and hair bands.

Nothing he is wearing looks like anything you couldn't have found in a department store or second hand store at the time.

Again, that is not outlandish, it was typical for the way we dressed back then.
I am not talking about readily available clothes. I am talking about , for example, some of the outlandish stuff pop guys like Bowie did or that rock musicians like Jimmy Page started getting into after the huge bucks started turning rock into a self parody.

If you went to a rock concert in 1970, you would see guys on stage with no pyro crap, no stage props, and nothing but instruments, amplifiers , and drums on stage. Guys in tie dyes of some kind or just jeans and T shirts.
The would of course raid the costume closet during photo shoots for album covers and all that, for effect.
But for the most part, it was all about the show and the music.
Even when Jimmy Page started wearing the custom made clothes in the mid 70s, it wasn't insanely outlandish, and certainly wasn't what everyone else was doing.

There's a story about Duane Allman idolizing Cream and Eric Clapton and when he finally caught the band in concert he was embarrassed by Slowie's pink velvet pants..but a week later, went and got a pair of his own.
Jagger is known for saying, What's the point of being in Rock n Roll if you can't wear a pink suit.
Little Richard and on, some artists can pull off the glam.

  23. But, earlier, you said this,

"Zeplin is one of the worst offenders in that area."

Anyway, I think the point of the thread is to just enjoy the photos.

    Rubbish!

    It's all show business....

And anti-image is an image in itself anyway.
