I'm not a guitar player, but I love the classic look of the Telecaster, favorite being that black Tele that Keith Richards is seen clubbing a stage intruder with in an earlier post.

Love the sounds/tone that Jimmy Page got out of his Tele on the Zeppelin debut. Shame that the guitar was later ruined.

Will have to check out some Roy Buchanan..

Johnny Marr played a Telecaster on a lot of The Smith's early songs.

No mention of John 5? His Tele collection is probably one of the best in the world - for real.

Saw his solo show recently and he's amazing.

    I was actually quoting wikipedia:

"Springsteen has claimed that the guitar he is pictured with on the Born To Run album cover is, in fact, a hybrid of two guitars, a Telecaster body and Esquire neck. However, it is a first-generation Esquire with two pickup routs. The Esquires had Esquire pickguards to cover the neck pickup hole. His guitar has a neck pickup installed, but not connected. [6][7]"

you can see the numbered links to footnotes, they reference this article from the fender G.B. and Ireland website, which says it is a 52 Esquire:

    Ten Terrific Telecaster® Guitars »

But, this link says it is in fact a tele body with an esquire neck:

Interesting Mods: Bruce Springsteen’s Fender Esquire | Fender Artist News »

see above, maybe I was wrong about the mystery.

Also to adjust your chronology a bit -

the Esquire was April 1950, and the first Broadcaster came into production in June. The 1950 Esquires had thinner bodies than the tele (much like Squier Teles are slightly thinner than Fenders these days.)

Many of these early models had to be returned under warranty because the unreinforced necks suffered from excess bowing. When this happened the single pickup model was briefly discontinued.

Later in 1950, the 2 pickup broadcaster was put out with a truss rod, and before 1950 was out Gretsch brought their lawsuit, so in the first few months of 51 they produced the rare 'nocaster' a Tele with a Fender logo but no model name, before the first "Telecaster" label guitars came out.

Alongside those, the Esquire single pickup model was reintroduced as a budget option, with the exact specs but only one pickup.

to quote Leo Fender "one of a kind" (although they have made a 'signature series' copy.)

George gave that guitar to Delaney Bramlett of Delaney and Bonnie.

The pic of Garcia playing it comes from the Festival Express tour which included the Dead, the Band, Janis Joplin, Buddy Guy, Delaney and Bonnie, etc.

Evidently jamming on that guitar sent Garcia on the fender kick that resulted in his hybrid "alligator" strat and his best guitar tones.

Delaney eventually put it up for auction, where it was bought by Ed Begley Jr for $434,000+ on behalf of George's widow Olivia Harrison.

If you look closely at the cover of Born to Run you will notice the Tele has three pickups.

    Nobody has mentioned yet...

Almost all if not all of Relayer plus some parts of Going for the One were recorded with this tele with a humbucker in the neck.

I thought that too, but when I looked into it a bit it seems the 'middle pickup' is actually an engraving on the pickguard:

this lends credence to the Esquire argument as a routed out Esquire would need a new pickguard, whereas a Tele with an Esquire neck would not. Of course, the Tele pickguard could be replaced just for kicks, so its not conclusive.
