I'm partial to the years '70 - '72 when I'm on a nostalgia kick, with favorites from those years including:

Ride Captain Ride - Blues Image
    Lonely Days - Bee Gees
Summer Breeze - Seals & Crofts
    Uncle Albert - Paul McCartney
Out in the Country - 3 Dog Night
Draggin' The Line - Tommy James
    Green-Eyed Lady - Sugarloaf
Hitchin' A Ride - Vanity Fare
Signs - Five Man Electrical Band
    No Matter What - Badfinger
    Liar - 3 Dog Night
Let Your Love Go - Bread
Hold Your Head Up - Argent

And the list goes on...pick a 2 or 3 year consecutive stretch of years that you enjoy revisiting from time-to-time.

1970 - 1972 were good years for oldies. But when I think of oldies, I usually think of the late 50's early 60's. To pick a year or two I'd have to go with 64 - 68. that covers a good portion of the British Invasion, Garage Band and Motown years. The high lights that is!

    Friends,

    My favorite year is 1966!

Why? 1966 was a wonderful transition year between the 'old Top 40' sound and the birth of classic rock. 60's Soul was near peaking. Garage bands were really springing up in the US and the British Invasion was still going very strong. There were still regional hits. Top 40 formatted stations took more risks with their playlists and the variety of music played in this format was at an all-time high. Soon after, playlists shrunk and stations edged away from album rock but, not in 1966. 1966 gave us 'Pet Sounds' which changed the whole concept of album releases at the time

But hey!, do not take my word for it, check out this list:

Grant Life is a rock, but the radio rolled me!

My favorite years are (and this is being conservative):

    1966
    1968
    1970
    1971
1972 (yes guys, after all the recent talk about this year, I realized I had to include it!)
    1973
    1974
    1975
    1976
    1979
    1980

hmmm, i'll have to think about the 80s and beyond.

Heh. Heh. I was thinking the same thing. I was going to vote for 1966, but didn't have time to list too many songs. No need - Bob seems to have covered it! I laughed out loud when I read Steve's post.

    Ed,

My project ends with the close of 1974 only because by 1975, FM Radio was the primary vehicle for Top 40 music...

I chose 1974 based on my recollection of those times.

    Bob

  17. Ed Bishop

You chose wisely, Bob; Top 40 was already on life-support by 1973; not so long after it was all but dead. A shame; not much to get enthusiastic about anymore, radio-wise. The young will never know what it was like...:(

Wow, you surprise me, ED! Not too long ago you basically cut things off at 1973, maybe 1974. Now you say it's 1975.

Can I get you to nudge it up just one more year?;)

I'm guessing that when you wrap up the mastering of the 60s stuff in another month, you will post 1972?

    Ed,

The big old AM Top 40 stations were dying like flys in '75. The FM's were not quite as slick except in big markets. We were fortunate to have a local FM Top 40 station that had hired all former AM Top 40 jocks.

They presented the hits from 1975 to about 1986 just like they had in the 60's. By '86 most of them had either retired or had been fired for being too old. I still hear one of them on the air. He is now in his 60's. He does mornings on the local 'Oldies' outlet. He still has the 'pipes'.

    Grant,

Yes, I am now in 1969 and burning up more tape because the tracks are getting longer in length on average. I will post 1972 within the next 30 days...

    Bob:)

  22. Ed Bishop

Ed Bishop Incredibly, I'm still here

I'm referring to Bob's cutoff points, actually. I think 1972 was the last big year for Top 40 radio, where you could hear everything on one station. The following year, it started to tighten up, and by '75, FM was beginning to have a real impact on even 45rpm airplay, since the playing of popular Lp cuts prompted (mostly)edited singles. But the programmers and consultants already had their tentacles in, and by '76 you really had to move around the dial to find any diversity.

But hell, if you want to push it to '76, why not? What FM and consultants didn't kill, disco club play did. No wonder the soul charts started looking so much the better by '76.
