How did I forget that? Finest white blues band debut ever with no apologies to Butterfield...

Such a great year, but I think for rock Green River by Creedence shades Santana’s debut, and for jazz Miles’ In a Silent Way. Still play all three regularly, 50 years on...

As others have mentioned individually, CCR released 3 great albums in 1969:
    Bayou Country
    Green River
    Willy And The Poor Boys

    Take your pick...

    Clarification:
When the OP said "American" album in thread title, was this just for USA bands/musicians, or are Canadians included too (as they are part of North America)?

Because if only USA, then The Band and Neil Young would be disqualified.

Can't believe only one person has mentioned CSN's debut and that it got only one like. I'm going to mention it again because I think it's one of the finest rock albums ever to come out of the States.

Maybe because Nash is English, so people here didn't count it as 100% American.

I still remember playing it for the first time and playing it again right after I was done with the first listen. I knew who these three guys were from their previous work but was blown away by their voices blending, playing, and writing on this album.

I think the rule should be... did the group form in America? And yes, that would make the Jimi Hendrix Experience an English band, but so be it. As Jagger said in the Jimi doc, "He was always ours, wasn't he?" (Or something to that effect.)

A lot of good choices, but if I had to pick one, I'd go with CCR's Green River.

A lot of great ones, hard to choose...

I’ll say Everybody Knows This is Nowhere just because, even though Neil Young has put out many ridiculously great albums since then, I don’t know that he has ever actually topped it.

I would put The Band at a close second, maybe even a tie on the right day. If we were talking about 1968, I would pick Big Pink without really having to think about it, though.
