I find him very patchy and gigantically overrated BUT he's a born performer, a brilliant rhythm guitarist, and as funky as hell when on. Massively talented for sure. For me its too few and far between. The only album I like all the way through is Dirty Mind. Very short but a wonderful little record.
Missed this live Questlove Prince set last night (4 of 5 hours) but it's a good one. He's got about 4 of them up on The Tube but so far this feels like the best. I'm not super picky about the selection of Prince tracks that DJs play in Prince sets but transitions are everything. Quest does talk a lot. But it's usually edifying. And he always has the most obscure versions of well known tracks.
I put on the Dortmund Lovesexy concert video last night to watch again. Amazing. You've got a HUGE stage in the round with superb musicianship (vocals, guitars, bass, drums, keyboards, brass) and you've got dance, choreography, theatre, costumes, girl power, a fountain, a swing, basketball, a moving car... funk, soul, jazz, pop, rock,... The Greatest Show On Earth.
From the official Prince Facebook page: Eric Leeds: "Somebody had asked me how many recording sessions I might’ve done with Prince over those years, and off the top I said it might’ve been 50, 75, somewhere around there. And then I got curious and I looked through my journals and all the records that I have, and I lost track over about 150, 160. And I would say that probably 80% of the stuff that I recorded for Prince is yet to be released."
Wish I'd seen him and his band live during that Dirty Mind Tour. A nice rehearsal version of Sticky Like Glue from sometime around the release of 2010... (best version of it on the Web)
Felt like some Live stuff. Paisley Park performance, circa '87. Apparently, it was the first public performance of songs from the Sign O The Times album.
circa 87? the first public performance? On december 31st 1987 the Sign Of The Times tour had ended… Maybe you're confused with the performance of march 21 1987?
Serious typo. It was their last. I came back to edit but after the 2 hour concert it was too late. Ha. Thanks. You could kind of tell too, I love the long instrumental segments best. The (official release) Sign O The Times concert has a very different energy to it if you get a chance to see it. Seems fresher, has more punch, but doesn't have that laid-back, looser groove of the New Year's Eve performance. I much prefer the later one. Classic.
One of my favourite jams, made up on the spot, amateur video recording but oh boy, it's the Berlin jam! Watch: 01.09.30 - 01.23.30 ~ if you have the time ...
