    Fair enough. :)

The Prince vocal versions of The Family tracks recently had major upgrades leaked. We can finally listen to The Family as a Prince album proper. :D

So what's up with people continually using Britney Spears as the face of this when Prince's own peers Madonna, Janet Jackson and Paula Abdul are who are responsible for this type of performing?

Man, I don't really want to extend the quibbling but I've seen Madonna and Janet live several times and can testify that it wasn't until very late in both careers that either had even canned backup vocals. Both usually performed with backup singers readily in view. Can't speak for Paula Abdul. Prince was completely Old School, where the whole point was to bring a live vibration to the party. But he'd certainly mix in recognizable vocal tracks from classic songs during transitions, for example, for interesting effects. I think people gripe when singers start relying on canned vocals to support their performance - and rightly so. That, and tiresome resort, "now you sing!" Even Prince was guilty of that.

Jammin' to The Slaughterhouse all week. One of his best straight up funk albums. Took a page from George Clinton on this one.

    Ugh, Such brilliance.
So much Eric Leeds on these tracks which makes me really happy. I still want to know how the hell these get out though in such amazing quality.

Let's just forget about HitnRun Phase 1. I fully blame Joshua Welton. Mind you what was Prince thinking.

His later albums never scored well on the dynamic range website. And the Purple Rain deluxe album was truly awful. It distorts in places for hecks sake.

Perhaps one day we'll see someone with passion and ability put together Vault material. Other bands get that treatment so it's a crying shame as a Prince fan not to see the same.

I tried playing the video of Prince performing Stevie Wonder’s “Maybe Your Baby” (it was on the first page), but it’s been deleted. So here’s another video of the same performance (IIRC):

Well, as I mentioned on the 'Homemade Compilations' thread, I just put together my go-to version of "Purple Rain" - basically a hypothetical 2-LP version, with all songs (save "When Doves Cry", since that wasn't altered for the final LP) in their original, uncut forms, and the two missing songs restored to the tracklist. :)

    SIDE ONE
    01) Let's Go Crazy - 12" version
    02) Take Me With U - unreleased long version
    03) The Beautiful Ones - unreleased long version

    SIDE TWO
    04) Computer Blue - 'Hallway Speech' version
    05) Darling Nikki - unreleased long version
+ I Am Fine - forwards this time!
    06) Wednesday - bumped from final album

    SIDE THREE
    07) When Doves Cry - album version (this track wasn't edited at all for the final LP)
    08) I Would Die 4 U - unreleased (slightly longer) version
    09) Baby I'm A Star - unreleased long version

    SIDE FOUR
    10) Purple Rain - composite of album intro + unreleased long version
    11) Father's Song - bumped from final album

Even though the quality jumps around (some of them are fairly low-fi), these have become my favorite versions of the songs.... except "Purple Rain", because that one was rightfully cut down. The extra verse in the middle adds nothing, and Prince cut out a lot of repetitive meandering in the guitar solo.

Somebody put up a Best Intro Song To An Album thread and I couldn't find a decent complete Let's Go Crazy video streamer from the introduction to Purple Rain. Found one.

I'd heard that Prince did the Batman soundtrack mainly for money. Because he'd lost quite a bit on the Lovesexy tour - especially the America leg, where they were counting on selling out multiple nights in every city like the Purple Rain tour.

Also, althoughahe had reached an artistic peak in 85-88, sales of those albums were way below that of Purple Rain. And his outgoings were going up and up, especially with the setting up of Paisley Park.

For me, Batman was his first and only non classic of the eighties. Electric Chair is brilliantly sinister. But the rest is just a little cheesy for my liking. Maybe it would make more sense if I ever saw the film.

There was at least one show on the PR tour that opened with Controversy instead of Let’s Go Crazy. Cool story! What happens when you run out of time for a sound check...

Not really a Prince fan. But would like to investigate his back catalogue.
Really enjoyed Plectrum Electrum and have always enjoyed Purple Rain and a few songs on symbol album.
Love his guitar work so what are his more guitar driven albums?
