It was loosely based on The Wages of Fear, which would have been a better title, but Friedkin insisted for years it was a different movie and a different idea. No matter what the truck was called, "Sorcerer" was not a good name for the film.

SORCEROR is a good pick. I had seen it on TV as a child and been transfixed.

Years later when video rentals became a thing I couldn't remember the name and was never able to figure it out in those pre-IMDb days. I had to wait to stumble on it again on a cable channel.

The Star Chamber had some merit. I remember wanting to see it but it was "R" so of course I had to wait for cable.

Fresh Horses...yep bad title. It makes it seem like a pretty heavy drama. Nothing else can be derived from the title.
Likewise having a couple of breezy brat pack-ish actors playing seamingly heavy drama...well it didn't exactly have my contemporaries lining up for tickets. I've never seen it.

Definitely a new title would have helped "SORCEROR."

Ringo agrees with you, the Monkees however changed the letters for themselves.
