    I thinking Doctor Sleep.
Wouldn’t it have fared better at the box office with The Shining 2 as a movie title ?

    Any others?

    The Predator

Confusing title as the original film was called Predator.

Predator 4 would have been better. Forgot about Shane Black’s failed reboot title/concept.

John Carter was based on the novel A Princess of Mars by Edgar Rice Burroughs, of Tarzan fame. I recall reading at the time of the movie's release that the producers had considered using the original title, but their marketing research revealed that no teenage boy would go to a movie with the word 'Princess' in the title, and no teenage girl would go to a movie with 'Mars' in the title. So they called it John Carter, and no one went to see it, since no one in their target demographic had ever heard of John Carter, much less read any of the books.

Doctor Sleep was exactly what came to mind, although it is the name of the novel. But general movie audiences would not know that the title has anything to do with The Shining. It should have been "The Shining 2: Doctor Sleep" IMO.

“A Perfect World” with Kevin Costner. It’s a boring title that doesn’t really say much of what the movie is about.

Live, Die, Repeat or Edge of Tomorrow? They couldn't make their minds up.

Live, Die, Repeat seems a much more marketable title.

I watched a nice little indie love story a while back. It was called 'Good Dick'.

Now it sounds like a dodgy porn movie but it's not anything like that. Can't help but feel the title may have put some people off.

Which is likely why they've essentially changed it to that. The Blu-ray cover makes it look like "EDGEOFTOMORROW" is one of the actors!

Stay (2005) starring Ewan McGregor, Naomi Watts, and Ryan Gosling. Directed by Marc Forster... his two previous films were both critically acclaimed and financially successful (Monster's Ball and Finding Neverland). It cost $50 million to make and only grossed a little over $3 million at the box office. I don't know what they could have titled it, but such an unimaginative title surely didn't help. It didn't get good reviews but has become a cult favourite.

Never heard of the film. So you could be onto something.

From what I recall, one main problem is that Disney's Mars Need Moms was such a bomb that the powers that be at Disney didn't want to risk another film title with the word "Mars" in it. Hollywood can be very superstitious at times. But just calling the film John Carter was a terrible idea from a marketing standpoint, as the box office results clearly show. Sometimes you have to wonder if anyone with common sense is in charge of decisions like this.

Not really box office, but how about Roma? Yes that’s the neighborhood, but it’s not what a lot of people are expecting when they hear Roma.

With a tiny bit of editing it could have been Mission Impossible:2098.

I think I'll go with John Carter, a case of the studio panicking and sabotaging themselves. It didn't stop me from seeing the film but then if I recall I probably only went to see it because it was directed by Andrew Stanton which is a reason I doubt the average movie-going public is going to have.

I couldn't figure out what this was supposed to mean, then I decided I didn't want to know.
