Stephen King said he wanted Kubrick to case someone like Jon Voigt, someone who seemed like a normal, everyday nice guy. Makes the descent into madness all the more unsettling.

Maybe Joseph Gordon-Levitt, or Paul Dano.

I cannot say, other than it should been an unknown or lesser known actor.

    Jack mugged the role, unfortunately.

the rest of the cast were faultless.
Ironic thing being The Shining is generally regarded as Jack Nicholson’s most iconic role.

A King fan here, I very much wanted to enjoy The Shining, but Nicholson, a distraction, ruined it for me.

Well the novel was way more scary. Over the years come to appreciate the film. What did you think of Doctor Sleep?

It’s funny... I’ve heard these arguments for years about Nicholson’s lack of character development, including way too much blather from Stephen King, but if you consider the character as written, he’s an alcoholic teacher who was fired for hitting a student and who broke his son’s arm while drunk and angry. I’m not sure this guy is ever going to appear like Joe Normal.

When King had the opportunity to do it his way, they hired Steven Weber, a hack sitcom actor, filmed it just like the book, and it was static and boring. So viva la Kubrick and Nicholson.

Prefer King as a writer not as actor/ director.

I didn't see Doctor Sleep. The Shining was an ominous scary story, as you say, not the movie.

I'm guessing fans of Nicholson may have adored him in The Shining (Here's Johnny), but I'd much prefer to see him in Five Easy Pieces.

  11. John Cusack in Love and Mercy. He doesn’t look a thing like Brian Wilson, and never convincingly inhabited the character. I never forgot that I was watching John Cusack. He also doesn’t look like an older Paul Dano, who was good as the younger Wilson.

I didn't care for Orlando Bloom in Kingdom of Heaven. You have all these heavyweight actors and character actors who played their roles superbly (Liam Neeson, Jeremy Irons, Ghassan Massoud, David Thewlis, Edward Norton, Michael Sheen, Alexander Siddig, Brendan Gleeson, etc.)...and...then you have Bloom.

Maybe Victor Mature would have been better.

Ha! Used to think he was Sylvester Stallone’s father. :)

Harrison Ford in both Raiders and Star Wars. I would have vastly preferred Tom Selleck and Kurt Russell in the respective roles.

Like Penelope Cruz and Matthew McConaughey in Sahara. Neither were bad, but seemed to be in different movies. Not that it mattered. The movie sucked anyway.

Tom Cruise as 6'5", 240 pound Jack Reacher who's size is part of his character.
Just so, so wrong. Cruise's hubris in casting himself ruined the films for fans of the books and made the character into a generic action hero.

Mark Wahlberg as Robert Parker's Spencer in that recent wrongheaded film is nearly as bad.

Whoever played the leader of the "bad guys" in Mad Max Fury Road. In Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior, the leader of the bad guys was the Humungus, played chillingly by Kjell Nilsson: [IMG]

In Fury Road, the bad leader looked like an old fogey out of a nursing home. Really a pathetic choice.

If Tom Selleck had been Indiana Jones in ' Raiders of the Lost Ark ' , that movie would never had become a franchise and would barely be remembered today.

    Did it ever .
My wife wanted to watch it. She'll watch anything as long as the main characters are attractive .
Try to imagine the hundreds of crappy movies I've sat through.
