Some movies are played by actors who become the character; in The Shining the character was Jack Nicholson.

I would say it should have played by an unknown or a little known actor.

Not a chance. The film was a success in spite of Ford, not because of him.

This topic was actually a premise that Chris Rock used in his monologue when he hosted the Oscars (I think it was in 1998).

    Have to disagree.
Wasn't whats-his-name up for the role but they passed on him?
They had to have someone with the right chutzpah and look for that role. Harrison was it.

i think Kubrick filmed it with so much space made for Nicholson.....it would need to be a totally different movie and director.

I believe at some point Kubrick gave the movie to Nicholson.

You're supposed to be immersed in the story, not be entertained by any individual actor.

I agree, he overacted. Since we're fantasizing I pick Robert Shaw (aside from the obvious that he had passed). Other better choices Anthony Hopkins, Willem Dafoe, and Rutger Hauer.

Yeah. Possibly his best performance, but I think Fonda would have been way more natural

Selleck was first choice for the role. He couldn't make the filming schedule due to his commitment to his TV show. Spielberg settled for Ford.

In my opinion, Ford's a wooden, one-dimensional actor. I can't think of a single thing he's done that wouldn't have benefited from a different actor.....With the exception of Blade Runner.....That character needed a wooden, one-dimensional performance.

I thought it was Sam Elliot who was up for the role.
    My mistake.
But , come on, Harrison Ford is Indiana Jones.

There are a few in the Star Wars prequels, I think Hayden first of all. he does the dark moody stuff, okay but he fails to show us a lighter side to Anakin that I would believe Obi-Wan would later look back favorably on. I think James McAvoy would have been better in the role. Jango Fett and young Boba I would put down as the other 2 I'm not sure who I would cast in that role, someone American probably so that the accent tracks with the OT, Kurt Russell.

They've both been mentioned already, but for me the two champs are:
    1) Keanu as Jonathan Harker
    2) Hayden as young Darth Vader

Keanu Reeves' comment years later re: Dracula was: "I was bad in that."
The crapness of the Star Wars prequels is of course not down to Christenson's casting, but by God he was miscast and awful. At least hire someone with some gravitas to at least allow us to partly believe this dude could grow up to be an evil fascist in a black mask.

Ryan O'Neal in Barry Lyndon. Took me completely out of the movie.

Mia Farrow in The Great Gatsby. Absolutely awful - Hard to believe she would have been the object of any man's desire, much less Robert Redford's Gatsby.
