Please do. Every note, bend, pick scrape, and harmonic perfectly placed. Plus it sounds like one of those walk in, plug in and play, first take nailed it solos!

I’ll play off the top of my head... thinking would render this impossible.

    1. Gilmour — Fat Old Sun (live). Gdańsk is as good as any and easily available.
    2. Howe — Yours Is No Disgrace (YesSongs)
    3. Garcia — Mind Left Body Jam (Dick’s Picks 12)
    4. Thompson (Richard) — Hard On Me (Semi-Detached Mock Tudor)
    5. Knopfler — what it is (Sailing to Philidelphia)

  16. Finally! It took almost two pages for someone to mention what many professional guitar players consider the greatest solo ever: "Machine Gun."

That it was improvised on the fly? Wheeew!

I'm not playing this game. :D

Jimi Hendrix - Red House from Hendrix In The West. The planets were in alignment. All the solos are great. Perfect timing, bends, even feedback. Great rhythm playing too.

Jeff Beck - Goodbye Pork Pie Hat.

Robin Trower - Daydream from Robin Trower Live

Allan Holdsworth - Beelzebub (Bruford tune)

Ollie Halsall - Give It All Away (Patto)

Ask a month from now & they might be different.
Lots of great lists so far.

Jeff Tweedy’s guitar work gets overshadowed by Nels Cline and Jay Bennett. I live his work on Ghost is Born, though, and that stereo phased solo in Hell is Chrome is definitely magical. I also love his Neil Young style work in the opening track At Least That’s What You Said.

While we are on Wilco, Nel’s Impossible Germany solo is a masterpiece and often even better live. My favourite solo of his, though, is the live version of Ashes of American Flags from the DVD of the same name. He took my least favourite track from Yankee Hotel and made it my favourite Wilco tune. Such mournful guitar work.

Have we defined, or narrowed the descriptor, 'solo' in this thread?

My first nomination is any version of Prove It All Night, 1978 Live version!
    Solo starts at 1:33

Lots of good ones here and I know I'm repeating some with this list.

    1. Supergrass - Late in the Day
Perfectly placed and gives me chills.

    2. Kåre & The Cavemen (aka "the Euroboys") - Filadelfia
Anything by these guys has a blistering solo.

    3. Wilco - Impossible Germany
Had to include some Nels Cline and this is one of the most memorable.

    4. Blind Faith - Presence of the Lord
Love this audacious fat wah-wah driven solo - I'm a big fan of late '60s Clapton per my avatar.

    5. Frank Zappa - Son of Mr. Green Genes
So many Zappa solos to pick but this was one of the early ones for me and I still love it.

The solo on the Velvet’s I Heard Her Call My Name should be exposed to invading aliens. They will go back into their UFO’s and not bother.
