I don't about everybody else, but I am convinced. WG Target = WG non-target = Japanese 32XD Japanese 3010-2 is RE-1 3010-2 Made in USA is RE-2
Guess it's my turn. The W. German is not the same mastering as the 32XD Ben. I used to own it and sold it when I got the W. German Target pressing that has the complete fade up in Gold Dust Woman like the non 32XD Japan Target. The 32XD is the secret remaster like the US. and Canadian non-Japan 1st pressings the W. German Target is not. Targets (not including the later 1987-88 32XD pressing) = original mastering with fade up on GDW Post Target pressings = secret remaster with cold start on GDW
My 32XD Japan Target and WG Target are digitally identical. Gold Dust fades up and clocks in at 4:52.7.
I am now starting to get confused. I have a WG target, and the total running time is approx. 39:39. Gold Dust Woman is 4:52 and fades in. The fade seems to be "complete" pretty much when Stevie Nicks starts singing, at around 0:11. It appears to me that this disc is identical to at least some of the 32XD-350 targets (maybe there are several versions?). On the other Japanese target, at what time in Gold Dust Woman does Stevie Nicks start singing? Also at around 0:11, or noticeably later? I would think that on every version, the fade-in should be complete by the time Stevie Nicks start singing. Since Gold Dust Woman runs about 8 seconds longer on the other target, is the extra time at the beginning of the song (so Stevie should start singing at around 0:19 into the song). I don't think any of the targets is the secret remaster RE-1. That came later, and a 10 second fade is certainly not a cold start. It seems to me there are two different target versions, and none of them is the secret remaster. I have the WG target and it sounds very good to me, but I haven't heard the other Japanese target versions. It definitely sounds better than the newest remastered version. I have never heard the RE-1 version. Roland
I just received my 32XD-350 target and it clocks in (using EAC) at the exact same time as your WG target. Yes, it would be nice if Scott could post a .wav file of the first few seconds of GDW from his 32XD.
Bringing up an old thread! I just compared the WG 3010-2 and Japan 3010-2 targets to the USA RE-2 and I can confirm that on the Japan Target Stevie begins singing on "Gold Dust Woman" around 0:19. The WG Target has Stevie coming in around 0:11. The USA RE-2 pressing begins around the same time as the Japan Target but is a TOTALLY DIFFERENT MASTERING (but we already knew that ). As for which on (WG or Japan) I feel is superior...I feel that the Japan 3010-2 is the best one. I felt the drums had the most depth, especially on the first hit on "You Make Loving Fun" and around 3:20 on "Gold Dust Woman" the Japan Target blows the WG Target away. Just for reference though, the Japan "Target" I used was the Target disc WITHOUT THE CROSSHAIRS! It has the print and character spacing of the Target but with no colors or crosshairs.
I'm with Jason now. He meant... I can confirm that on the Japan Target Stevie begins singing on "Gold Dust Woman" around 0:15.
Thanks Jacob. Yeah, Jacob (bopdd) and I are amazed at the differences between these two pressings. Each track varies greatly.
I have all the reasons why this was done, how it was done and when. If I had a break to type it all up (like I did the Van Morrison MOONDANCE story) I would; you would find it interesting reading..
Share away Steve. I've kept the Japanese Target pressing 32XD-350 because it sounds a bit more real than the W. German Target mastering.
The MOONDANCE thread was great. When you get the time I, and I'm sure everyone else, would love to hear the story. Thanks Steve!
I have trhe 32XD-350 Target as well and would like the here the 'secret mastering' story. If it's anything like the Van Morrison Moondance story, it'll be a piece of history heretofore AFAIK untold and unknown.
I have the 32XD Japan target, the US 3010-2 RE-2, and the (now apparently highly sought after) DVD-A. My only comments would be that (i) my 32XD GDW fades in about 11 seconds as well, and (ii) with the DVD-A, a 1500 watt subwoofer does wonders for John McVie's bass lines. Anyway, I would also be interested in Steve's story.
Probably the original LP because to have Gold Dust Woman start on it's own without that lovely haunting fade in from Oh Daddy is sacrilage to these ears. (It seems too hard to find the other versions on CD)
