Traffic booked a brief tour to record a live album with Mason guesting to boost sales. The album had his name on the cover, along with all the band members, and two songs from his successful Alone Together. The original release wasn’t credited to Traffic. Although Mason wanted to rejoin Traffic, they made it clear the tour and album were all there was going to be.

Would Adrian Belew count for his vocal on Cadence and Cascade? He was no longer a member of King Crimson and Fripp asked him to sing on an old Crim track. Then the mighty Crim reformed a year or so later.

Someone mentioned Trevor Horn but as far as Yes is concerned, there's much more to it.

Tony Kaye returned to keyboard duties in Yes for quite a lengthy stint (a decade, basically) after leaving the band in 1971.

Jon Anderson returned to the role of the lead vocalist in 1983 for 90125 after quitting the band in 1980 and, technically, again in 1991 for the Union project until 2008.

Rick returned a whole whopping FOUR times to the band lol: aforementioned 1977, as well as 1991, 1995, 2002.

Steve Howe returned to Yes twice: 1991, 1995.

Bill Bruford briefly returned in 1991.

(Disclaimer: it can be argued that all three mentioned above returned in 1989 but the project was called differently, even though Anderson treated it as Yes, unofficially.)

Billy Sherwood obviously became the primary bass player after Chris' passing after being in the band offiially throughout 1997-2000.

Geoff Downes resumed keyboard duties for 2011 album onwards after not being in the band for more than two decades.

Bruce Kulick played lead guitar on the track "Within" on Kiss's 1998 album Psycho Circus. He was forced out of the band when the original lineup reformed in 1996. The album itself was infamous for the fact that Ace and Peter didn't play on most of the tracks, and the entire band only played on one track together.

I believe Bruce also claimed he was hired to record some guitar parts for the "live" Kiss compilation "You Wanted the Best, You Got the Best" in 1996 as a ghost player after he was out of the band, but that might just be a rumor.

Surely these are all examples of re-joining the band rather than making guest appearances as ex-members though?

ah, okay, you're right. guest appearance is different, sure. Trevor Horn than don't fit either, because he was 90125 and Fly From Here producer and not a guest musician. My example with Bowie and Ronson doesn't fit either, because Black Tie White Noise is not a David Bowie and the Spiders from Mars record, it's just a David Bowie solo album.

Derek Forbes of Simple Minds was ousted in early 1985 but returned as a guest to add (uncredited) bass overdubs to the 1987 Live In The City of Light double album.
He re-joined the band in 1997-1999, but then returned to demo tracks for Black & White in 2005.

I was thinking of David Sancious , who was an original member of the E Street Band as well.
But neither Human Touch nor Western Stars are E Street Band- featured albums.
But maybe I’m just being a stickler.

It is odd though how Springsteen only uses him when he doesn’t use the ESB.

Bill Wyman played on The Rolling Stones’ cover of Dylan’s “Watching the River Flow,” which appeared on a 2011 Ian Stewart tribute album. It isn’t labeled as “The Rolling Stones” on the album; it’s Mick, Keith, Bill, Charlie and Ron with Ben Waters.

Pat Smear played on a few Foo Fighters tracks from Echoes, Silence and Grace and Greatest Hits (new recordings) before re-joining the band full time in 2011.

Nick Oliver sings backing vocals on Queens of the Stone Age’s “If I Had a Tail,” nearly a full decade after being fired from the band.

IMO at least, Roy Bittan's keyboards became a big part of the definition of ESB once he replaced Sancious.

The Housemartins took this concept a stage further. In between their first and second albums, drummer Hugh Whitaker left and was replaced by Dave Hemingway.

When it came to making the video for "Five Get Over Excited", a single from their 2nd album, former drummer Hugh returns and is shown being kidnapped by new drummer Dave who ties him in a sack. Dave assumes his seat on drums as the rest of the band come and prod and poke him wondering who he is! :)
