Greg was out at RTI with us a while back and took a few snaps of us working on the 45 RPM cutting of "Jazz Impressions Of Black Orpheus".

Here is a shot of the mastering console and my notes (old DCC and new) for mastering this classic Vince Guaraldi album.

Note the two pieces of RED TAPE marking where I added one db at 10k on the Sontec analog EQ. This was for the last song. "Since I Fell For You", to try to get it to match sonically the rest of the songs. The red tape is to remind me to "ease in" the EQ when the drums come in..

I'm listening very hard to "Cast Your Fate To The Wind".....

Note dreadful Altoid mints on my left; they keep my brain alert...:)

Also note that this song is being cut "flat"...

Cutting lacquer of "Cast Your Fate To The Wind" (45 RPM side 5).

Note the "test groove" at the outer edge of lacquer. This outside part will be cut off in plating stamper.

One of the pressing machines in the RTI pressing room. That big trash can is for collecting the "flash" that is trimmed off the outer edge of the record while still hot...

That is white paper and separates the newly pressed discs in sections of 10 or some number like that.

Forgive me if this was posted elsewhere, and I missed it, but is Kevin's new cutting system solid state or tube powered? The main cutting amps I mean. And if tubes are used, where along the signal chain? The tape deck electronics? Thanks, Steve.

The cutting amps are proprietary solid state; extreme neutrality is the key to making a good record. The only way to achieve this is to give the cutter head enough clean power to do its job correctly...

Steve, will Kevins cutting system produce a better laquer than my 1949 Presto 7N?

    :)
